The United Way of Central Virginia is partnering with two companies to match money raised over the next month to meet its campaign goal, which is short $75,000.
New contributions will be matched by Banker Steel and Centra Health up to $50,000, so the nonprofit organization could exceed its campaign goal with the matching funds.
The donations must be new or increased gifts and be received by March 15, she said. The group supports more than 50 programs by more than 30 partner agencies.
Martin said the need for services increased in the past few years and donations have shrunk. She said Centra and Banker Steel stepped up to help.
?Along with the needs that were already pre-existing in the community, this has added a lot to it to make our needs substantially more,? she said. ?They both have stepped up knowing the tough economic times we?re in.
Don Banker, owner and chief executive officer for Banker Steel, said helping United Way is important to the community because the group helps fund so many organizations.
?United Way has the ability to affect the largest group of people,? he said. ?It?s kind of like a mutual fund of agencies that are able to help our community.?
Bill Varner, Centra?s vice president for strategic planning and marketing, said Centra shares similar goals with United Way and he thinks helping fund the group is a way to make a large impact locally.
?The reason we agreed to that is we see all of these agencies that are struggling to get the funds they need to get to perform the worthy work they do,? he said.
