Our UFC 135 results recap breaks down the action from the Matt Hughes vs. Josh Koscheck semi-main event.

Koscheck took the fight on short notice after Diego Sanchez pulled out due to injury, and was fighting for the first time since being injured by Georges St. Pierre in December. The layoff didn't seem to impact Koscheck at all, as he picked up a first round KO victory over the Hall of Fame former champion Hughes.
From the beginning of the fight, it was clear that Koscheck was the bigger, more aggressive fighter in the stand-up. Hughes displayed good defense, showing that he came in anticipating a stand-up fight. Unfortunately for fans of the legend, Koscheck was simply too much. He finally managed to stagger Hughes late in the round, then never let up, earning the KO with mere seconds left in the round. Post-fight, a visibly teary Matt Hughes thanked the crowd, but insisted that he wasn't officially retiring just yet, instead asking the UFC to put him "on the shelf."
The fight ending combo showed good aggression and finishing tendencies from Koscheck, which is more than a lot of fighters with a wrestling base can claim. It was sad to see Hughes go down like that, but it was an impressive attack from Kos.
Josh Koscheck finds himself in a tough spot. He is obviously still near the top of the Welterweight division, but there's really no reason for him to get a third shot at St. Pierre. So, where does he go? His brash personality makes him the kind of fighter who can make a relatively meaningless fight compelling, so maybe it's time for him to have some outside the box grudge matches. Before Diego went down, there was talk of either Koscheck vs. Stephan Bonnar, or, building off of a 7 year old grudge, Koscheck vs. Chris Leben. Either one would be fun.
Matt Hughes said it himself - he's not retired, but he's on the shelf. What does that mean exactly? Probably that he would compete in the right kind of legends fight, but he's not going to go out there and face just anyone. Question is, what legend fights are there for him? He could try to avenge those two Dennis Hallman loses, and for some reason, Royce Gracie keeps talking about a Hughes rematch, but I'm not sure either of those fights really appeal to the UFC. Could be some time before we see Hughes in action again, if ever.
by ElliotMatheny on Sep 26, 2011 2:15 AM EDT reply actions Seeing as I'm from the Midwest I am a huge Hughes fan. It is painful to watch him in the Octagon as of late. Reminds me a lot of when Jordan is guarding Iverson and Allen completely clowns him. Matt just cannot take a punch and quite frankly worries me. Matt you are a pioneer of the sport and everyone that comes after you respects you for what you?ve done but it?s time to hang em up.
I'll never really understand the hate for this guy...... There are guys that are a zillion times as cocky as Hughes. The dude is a hard working, God-fearing, family man. What a lowlife!!!!!!
1. during tuf 4, he dissed gsp in front of everyone (when gsp told hughes that he will teach him one technique if hughes teaches him one, then hughes said ?armbar escape?? what a penis thing to say)
3. Serra has said way worse about Hughes but I don?t have the brain capacity to go dig it all up. What Hughes said is pretty much true because to be any kind of ?true? champion you need to defend the belt. Let?s be honest here if it wasn?t for TUF Serra would have never even came close to a title shot. All that aside, I like Serra.
4. If atheists spent a little more energy focusing on something more than worrying about what Christians are doing than they might be a little more productive, but whatever. He didn?t hold anyone at gunpoint and force them to read.
5. I?m not sure which fight you are talking about but I vaguely remember him turning his back on someone but the guy that was fighting seemed like he wasn?t listening or he half-assed it.
6. Like I said I?m a Serra fan myself but one thing that irks me about Serra is that he makes it so obvious that he was picked on when he was younger by someone similar to Hughes. I think I?ve even heard him say that had happened in an interview somewhere.

"But he sits there like a robot and doesn't say anything at all, just like he's not going to say anything about me calling him a bitch now. If I saw B.J. Penn walking down the street and called him a bitch, we would be fighting right there on the spot."

by Warhand on Sep 26, 2011 2:55 AM EDT up reply actions Were you there when he did this????? I wasn?t either but I am going to conjure up two scenarios of what may have happened. What I think went down and what you are implying went down.
1. Some reps from this clothing line approached Matt and asked him to take a picture holding this shirt in exchange for monetary compensation. Maybe Matt should have examined the shirt more extensively or researched the company. Call him ignorant of the situation but don?t call him a racist.
2. Matt is secretly in the Aryan Brotherhood which would explain why he trains or has trained with with Robbie Lawler and Drew Mcfederies. He started this company in order to fill the coffers of the KKK so they could overthrow Dana.
