Hey, we have a ?Maverick? pilot who just crashed a $30 million plane (a lot of money back then, kids. I realize now that wouldn?t buy the landing gear of a stealth bomber today), killing his best friend and co-pilot in the process. What do we do? Keep sending him up in the air. Nothing says sound judgment like putting a brooding, grieving, mentally unstable person in the cockpit of an expensive killing machine that goes 6,000 mile-per-hour. Yes, movies are an escape from reality. I get it. There is no such thing as the Lollipop Guild. But, man, in real life Pete Mitchell would be an Air Force pencil pusher with a really cool nickname.
