Tom Bosley, who was one of the all-time great TV dads, passed away this morning after what his family termed a ?brief battle? with lung cancer. He was 83.

Tom Bosley?s agent, Sheryl Abrams, told the Associated Press that he suffered from heart failure at a hospital near his Palm Springs home and that he was also battling lung cancer.

The actor had a wide spectrum of roles that he played throughout his career, but he is and always will be best remembered as Howard Cunningham on the hit ?70s TV show, Happy Days.

The show ran for ten years from 1974 to 1984 and spanned 255 episodes, all of which featured Bosley. The other two characters that appeared in every episode were Tom Bosley?s TV wife, Marion Ross and the Fonz, Henry Winkler.

?Tom?s insight, talent, strength of character and comic timing made him a vital central figure in the ?Happy Days? experience. A great father and husband, and a wonderful artist, Tom led by example, and made us all laugh while he was doing it. My last conversations with Tom reflected the love of life and peace of mind that he always maintained throughout his full and rewarding life. I miss him already.? ? said a statement from Ron Howard, who played Richie Cunningham.

Bosley?s TV wife, Marion Ross, told the AP, ?He was so smart he could fix the end of a joke or a scene on the spot. We made a perfect couple. I played picolo to his tuba.?

Younger generations may not be so familiar with Tom Bosley, but the world surely lost one of the best TV dad?s we?ll ever know, and an all-around beloved and great talent.
