We acknowledge the disruptions to our train service last week were of an unprecedented scale since SMRT started operating the service 24 years ago.

The Board?s priority is the safety of our commuters and reliability of our system, and to ensure that management is adequately resourced and maintenance not compromised.

SMRT will work closely with the Land Transport Authority (LTA) to restore service levels as quickly as possible without compromising the safety of our system. The Board has full confidence in the technical competence of our professional team in managing and maintaining our train system.

The Prime Minister has said the government will be appointing a Committee of Inquiry (COI). SMRT will assist the COI in whatever ways we may be called upon to do. The CEO whom the Board holds accountable for the proper management of SMRT, and her team, will have to play an important role in this.

external experts and internal resources to conduct the investigation into the root causes of the disruptions, adequacy of our emergency response and the required remedial actions. This is an internal investigation separate from the COI and the team will report to the Board. Where issues are identified that require action, the Board will take that action. And we will share the results of our internal investigation with the COI.

The disruptions last week have shown we need to improve on our emergency response and management procedures, as well as how we communicate with commuters and the public in an incident of this scale. We hear the public?s concern in this regard. We will move quickly to implement learning points that have come out of these disruptions.

Mr Koh Yong Guan, Chairman of SMRT, said, ?My colleagues and I take the disruptions and inconveniences caused to our train passengers last week very seriously. The Board will spare no effort and resources to ensure that SMRT earns back the confidence of the commuters and public. We apologise to the travelling public for the disruptions and inconveniences in the last week.?

Committee of Inquiry has to be independent. In the case of Temasek and GLCs its wrong doings should not be investigated by government-linked panelists. Why? Because temasek and GLCs are not concerned with people?s interests but rather their own commercial profits and their own personal own share and business interests.

Earn back the confidence so that next year fare hike can be increased again? Please lah, earning confidence is for passengers safety sake, not any monetary gain in future. Know the difference. We want fare hike to cease for the next 10 years.

I?m equally sceptical as the above TOC netizens. COI headed by Ong can never be independent. THey whole gang is working for the same big brother. If it?s just some cosmetic effort to ?gain public confidence?, i don?t give a damn. It?s a mockery indeed!

Ong Ye Kung is the wrong choice. He is a PAP member and he derive director fee from SMRT. He is a biased person in this case to be truly independent. His choice is more politically motivated to raised the profile of this failure in ge2011.

Why do we pay our ministers millions and then need to appoint Committees for everything that no one has the guts to decide? Put SPH on probation immediately. Then see how she performs in the next few months!

The Committee of Inquiry should not restrict its? scope of findings just solely for answering the recent disruptions. It must also adopt an anticipative and preemptive approach in its findings.

The SMRT will do all the ?investigations? which involved asking all the ?relevant? questions and then send this ? highly comprehensive and unbiased ? report to the COI members who will rubber stamp it and close shop.

This is the ?Best time? to make an ?exemplary? out of ? fat, arrogants CEOs or even MPs? ,those who has ?lost their directions & commitment to serve?

May be I got banned from ST forum for saying this (& for unknowingly stumbling upon their many skeletons that spilled out of the cupboard). They even spend the time & effort to monitor what has been said to silence them? They cannot blame people for speculating if they just ban and don?t give reasons or inform others.

They accuse people of ?suggesting? yet they have been suggesting (that PAP can do no wrong, it is always the people, even finding ways to blame the people for not remaining calm like texting, lol).

Put the SMRT CEO to run London?s underground. I bet with you she won?t last a day. I doubt she knows how to carry out planned disruptions for preventive maintenance in such an intricate rail network as London?s. If she does not do it, the century old system will grind to a halt in no time. Even is she is able to do it, she will make losses because there are no cheap foreign workers for her to use.

The code of conduct in the gangster world goes something like this: As long as you don?t offend the chief and say YES SIR all the time, the chief will protect you from all your enemies whom you may have offended in a lifetime of wrong doings.

Promoting defeated PAP candidate GE-2011 for GE-2016.He indeed one of many puppets like Gerard Ee created, invented, manufactured & produced by PAP regime..Confirm,the real outcome will be tightly conceal from public knowledge.

?Transport operator SMRT Corporation today said Chairman Choo Chiau Beng, 61, will retire at the upcoming Annual General Meeting on July 23, after six years heading its Board of Directors. The Board has nominated Koh Yong Guan as its next non-executive Chairman.

Koh, 63, has been a Board Member of SMRT since April 2, 2007. He is currently Chairman of Central Provident Fund Board, a member of the Board of the Monetary Authority of Singapore, and also Singapore?s non-resident High Commissioner to Canada.

Koh was the Permanent Secretary of various Ministries, namely, Defence, Finance, Health and National Development. He was also the Commissioner of Inland Revenue. His last position in the Civil Service was the Managing Director of the Monetary Authority of Singapore.?

Koh Yong Guan should step down immediately. He was sleeping on his watch. Perhaps the Chairmanship of SMRT is a retirement reward and in local lingo he is on ?gagi buta?.

Let us face it: these positions like the chairmanships of Singtel, Singapore Power, Singapore Technologies, Temesek Holdings, CIG, etc. are reserved for Government retirees who are really PAP cronies and the process of the appointments have been much abused by the PAP Government.

Compare this to say Wee Cho Yaw of UOB. Wee Cho Yaw is responsible to the shareholders of the bank and if there are screw-ups, he will most likely have to step down to take responsibility.

He has been ?independent? director since 2006. Tell me, what has he questioned SMRT about since his tenure? Nothing, just a PAP and NTUC insider in a public listed company. PM Lee is trying to score political points in this COI. Sad to say, it has already backfired and the public is not confident of a truly independent and unbias report.

Ong Ye Kung was in the PAP Aljunied GRC team who lost the election. LHL said after the election that he will be thinking of other ways to get this NTUC bloke on board the gravy train. Is this one of the ways to raise Ong?s profile?

Party interest also comes before national interest. This has been the hidden agenda of the PAP since its inception. Singapore needs regional leadership and not party leadership . Why should we pay party leaders world leaders? salaries. They don?t even care whether Singaporeans live or die,as long as the party survives.

i believe PM when he said that GE 2016 will start soon. looks like its started with a bang. i am certain all future national hoo-haa will be calculated & weighed to maximise their political stranglehold.

in the train business, track record can just throw out of the window wan mey? no wonder the tracks got so many faults, trains also need the tracks to be in good condition. can lobang here, rotting wood planks there??

Why is the PM turning this blunder into a political opportunity by showcasing Ong Yu Kung,so that in the 2016 election, he could say that Ong fixed the problem and therefore deserved the votes?

Well Mr PM, your hidden agenda has been exposed. You are always putting your party agenda above national agenda. You are always compromising the safety of the citizens. It?s a long time to 2016 and there will be many breakdowns and you can be sure the citizens will point the fingers directly at Ong for doing a bad job. It?s the price you pay for being blatantly dishonest with the people of Singapore. Dooms day awaits you in 2016.

Independent COI is not possible in Singapore now. Political price to pay may be too high. A bit of wayang wayang will cost lesser politically.

Ong Y K lost Aljunied. It means the people don?t want and don?t trust him. Is the PM trying to challenge the people by nominating him? We don?t want him, He is not credible. Whatever he recommends is political. There will be plenty of cover-ups. Sad day for Singaporeans and Singapore. We await 2016.

There are some very dumb people in leadership in government. 1. How can you possibly appoint a member of the SMRT board to head the COI? 2. How can you even consider a PAP henchman to lead the inquiry?
