He announces his "possible candidacy for the president of the United States of South Carolina"
Late night comedian Stephen Colbert said on The Colbert Report Thursday that he was entering into South Carolina's Republican presidential primary on Jan. 21.
The 47-year-old comedian joked that "for over a day now" residents of the southern state had been "crying out for someone who can restore our nation's former greatness to its current perfection."
"America, that someone is now," he proclaimed. "I am proud to announce that I am forming an exploratory committee to lay the groundwork for my possible candidacy for the president of the United States of South Carolina."
In Oct. 2007, Colbert announced his candidacy for President on his Comedy Central show, saying he was going to run on the Republican and democratic platforms, but only in his native South Carolina. He withdrew his name from the Republican party because of the steep entry fee, and his attempt to get on the ballot was, however, blocked by Democratic party officials.
