(AP Photo/Jack Dempsey)The Denver Broncos ended their 2011 season with $27.88 million in cap room, the 2nd largest number in the league, according to a ProFootballTalk report. Translation: they spent less on their payroll than 30 teams in the NFL last year.

That being said, they ended the season of the Pittsburgh Steelers in the playoffs. The Steelers had the league?s largest payroll, with remaining cap space of only $506,000.

Also worth noting: the Broncos can (and should) elect to rollover that leftover $27.88 million into their 2012 cap limit with the new CBA, giving them a lot of flexibility this offseason.

For every Steelers moment of joy in the playoffs, there has been an equal measure of disappointment. The Steelers and Broncos are 3-3 against each other in the postseason. Denver is also 17-10&1 against Steelers. So with all the greatness you speak of it just never happened against Denver.

not sure why we'd roll all that over... we're not going after top tier free agents. coupled with the salary from our 19 or so free agents coming off the books, just the normal cap room should be enough to resign the guys we want and make a few 'value' siginings plus get all our draft picks into camp. since our first pick is 25 we don't need a ton of cash for our first rounder at all.

From what I've read there are no penalties, no costs at all, to rolling over the cap number. So why not do it? It only gives us flexibility to go after players we want; we don't necessarily *have to* spend it.

when the 90% clause kicks in then there is more money out of Bowlens pocket, and if we are building through the draft and not shopping for high priced vets then there seems to be no value added to bring the money along.

Over paying for players isn't that new of a thing. The Yankees, Red Sox, Eagles, Cowboys, just to name a few. Just because they get a fatter check doesn't make them better than everyone else.
