?Two feet deep snow has accumulated on the highway in Banihal sector. Although snow clearance operation was started at 5.30 am, the highway has been closed to ensure safety of passengers and vehicles?, Brigadier TPS Rawat, chief engineer of Border Roads Organization (BRO), said.

Snowfall started in Srinagar and other places in the valley Monday morning. The tourist resort of Pahalgam got maximum 55 cm of snow. The fresh snowfall in Pahalgam had increased the amount of accumulated snow in the resort to around one meter.

?While heavy snowfall is expected in the higher reaches, there would be moderate snowfall in the plains. The weather would show signs of improvement from Tuesday afternoon onwards,? Sonam Lotus, director of the local MET office, said.

According to an official spokesman the snow depth recorded at various places today was Chrar-e-Sharief 4 to 5 inches, Yusmarg 4 to 5 inches, Gulmarg 12 to 18 inches, Kupwara 4 to 5 inches, Pulwama 2 inches, Shopian 3-4 inches, Anantnag 1 to 2 inches, DH Pora 9 to 10 inches, Kulan 7 to 8 inches, Vailo 4 to 5 inches, Tral 2 to 3 inches, Kulgam 5 inches and Kupwara 4 to 5 inches.

The summer capital, where the minimum temperature had hovered just above the freezing point, recorded 5.6 millimeters of rainfall, the official said.

Snow clearance, according to officials, was started early morning by the Mechanical Engineering Department and all inter-district roads and major roads in the districts were open for traffic.

Electric supply in the valley by and large remained normal, excepting disruption in some far flung areas and the Kursu-Padshahi Bagh transmission line.

Authorities here today issued a medium danger avalanche warning in hilly areas close to the Line of Control (LoC) in north Kashmir following fresh snowfall across the Valley.

?On the basis of information from Snow and Avalanche Study Establishment (SASE), the Divisional Disaster Management Authority issued a medium danger avalanche warning for higher reaches of Gulmarg, Chowkibal, Tangdhar, Keran, Machil and Gurez areas in north Kashmir,? an official spokesman said.

?People living in these areas, above the height of 8,000 feet, have been advised not to venture in avalanche prone areas and to take precaution,? the spokesman added.

Air traffic with the Valley, had got affected in the morning, but was restored in the afternoon and all flights operated, except the morning Go-Air flight which got cancelled, an official spokesman said. He said the Kargil Courier between Srinagar and Kargil got cancelled, due to bad weather.

According to Station Manager, Air India Jammu, Sanjeev Mishri, Air India will operate additional flight to Leh tomorrow at 0950 hours from Jammu.

The departure of the additional flight IL-4450 will take place at 0950 hours from Jammu Airport for Leh. All the stranded passengers of the cancelled flights are advised to report to Jammu Airport at 0830 hours, he said.
