A man has arrived at the clinic complaining of chest pains and shortness of breath. Rather than treat the patient a doctor instead misdiagnosed his condition, suggested that the patient was suffering from a virus and told the patient to go home. No other treatment was prescribed. The patient then went home, made a point out of writing up his will, and died.

An acquaintance of this individual had called 911 and said the patient had collapsed and was unconscious. Emergency medical providers were sent but were unable to revive him, and the patient died on his way to the hospital. It turns out that the patient had died of a pulmonary embolism.

Many Chicago residents have suffered and quickly died from pulmonary embolisms. Because pulmonary embolism tends to block major blood vessels, it's vital to quickly diagnose it irreversible damage or death occurs. Surviving a pulmonary embolism requires that the physician spot symptoms of heart attack or stroke and take immediate medical action.

Though the symptoms may be similar, a doctor must make certain that a patient complaining of shortness of breath and chest pain doesn't have something more serious than a cold or flu. Patients generally do not just show up at the emergency room unless the symptoms to them seem unusually severe. For whatever reason, the physician failed to take the patient's complaints seriously.

The estate of a deceased man has now just recently been awarded $1.065 million in a medical malpractice and wrongful death lawsuit. The attorney for the estate alleged the doctor was negligent failing to diagnose the pulmonary embolism and then discharging the patient.
