a a A week earlier in a loss to Atlanta, two 80-yard touchdown drives did in the Eagles' defense and the group vowed to improve the next chance it had.
On Sunday at Lincoln Financial Field, the defense again had its troubles in the fourth quarter as the Giants put together a pair of touchdown drives to come from behind in a 29-16 win.
"It's frustrating," said cornerback Nnamdi Asomugha, who was involved in one of the touchdowns, a 28-yard pass to wide receiver Victor Cruz, a play on which Asomugha and safety Jarrad Page were in perfect position to break up the pass -- and neither player did. "We're that close, but we're not finishing the task. It's something, collectively, we need to improve.
The Eagles were ahead 16-14 when Cruz made his touchdown catch, his second of the afternoon. Asomugha missed a tackle on Cruz in the first quarter on the receiver's 74-yard catch and run that gave the Giants a 14-0 lead as the secondary once again gave up four touchdown passes.
On the second Cruz touchdown catch, Asomugha just didn't make a play that was right in front of him. Cruz ran an inside route and then turned to the outside and caught Manning's jump ball, wrestling the pass away from the defensive backs.
The entire defense has to be better, especially in the first and fourth quarters. The Eagles have permitted 28 points in the first quarter of three games and 29 points in the fourth quarter of those games.
"We think we're working hard, but we have to work harder," said Page. "We have to detail our work and be more complete. You can't play anything less than 60 minutes and expect to win against good teams, and every team in the NFL is a good team." You must be logged in to post a comment.
I think we need invest in a MLB a good one with some age and experience the d-line is good babin needs to quit getting flaged for small things but I think getting a good MLb would help mathews grow and help him learn and maybe help close all the gaps. I think the wide 9 thing is silly to may gaps and they say its meant for the pass its leaving big holes for the run and isnt stoping the pass at all!
Its saying a lot about our defense when Asante Samuel is the surest tackler amoungst our DBs. WTF. Why didn't jump on Takeo Spikes when The Niner's let him go. He can still play despite his age and he would have brought much needed leadership and toughness to the Eagles' D. Also Casey Matthews could have learned alot from him. Face it when you start an undersized rookie as your middle linbacker at the beginning of the season you have problems.
if our formations were spread out and we stop having 2 man routes, and routes that take 15 yards to develop the chances of vick getting hit will decline drastically. its time for new offensive schemes. we should be a true west coast offense, quick strike, and make ppl miss. then when teams play more coverage, shady and vick can do the ground work. btw the defensive calls once again are terrible, no more drc blitzs, no more sending 7 on 3rd and long. no need with the talent we have that can cover 1 on 1. on a 3rd and long if they pick up 6 yrds so whatr we still get the ball back. instead we get beat and give up 40 yrds or a td. REDZONE! WHY RUN WITH MCCOY ALL THE WAY TO THE REDZONE THEN GO TO THE FB? WHY NOT RIDE MCCOY, OR RUN IT TO THE OUTSIDE OR, BOOTLEG AND VICK RUN IT IN. SANCHEZ DID IT YESTERDAY AND IT MAD ME SICK TO SEE IT.
Fourth quarter defense falters? How about the first quarter defense which put the team in a 1st quarter hole hole at 14-0 with two rediculous long touchdowns. This defense is an embarrassment to the great Eagle defenses of the past. LB, safety, and lack of a real DC is an obvious concern which really doesn't have a fix this season. It's hard to watch the excellent defensive line's wasted effort wasted by such low grade talent in the middle. Tackling on this team is the worst I've seen from an Eagles unit in quite some time. THat's saying something because it wasn't good the last couple of years either. It's going to be a long season for this over rated low talent defensive unit.
asante cant play safety, safeties must tackle which is asantes worst nightmare. i wish matthews would rise up against the criticism, but as of now he still needs a lot of practice, i would take jordan just for experience.
would this work having nate allen play the free safety and asante playing the strong with drc as the number 2 corner and nnamdi as the 1 corner? and akeem jordan taking over casey matthews spot or brian rolle?
