MoreRich Show still is stiff a couple of weeks after a cement truck failed to stop at a traffic light where Show had stopped waiting for the light to change.

Judging by the accordion-style crushing of his favorite car, it's hard to believe he wasn't more seriously hurt, or even killed, when he was struck from behind. Show says that's his doctor's opinion, too.

So it's "so long" to his 2006 Subaru Forester, so compressed that he couldn't pull a blanket out of the back seat from between the squashed metal.

"But I didn't break any bones," Show, 53, says with a smile nearly a week after the accident as he plays a mini-Martin acoustic guitar at home on the couch next to one of his dogs, Violet. He named the beagle-husky mix after the popular band Show and friends have reincarnated several times over the years.

But Show hasn't retired. He'll play a solo gig at Latitude 44 on Friday night. Fans can also catch him during Link Live earlier that day, at 4 p.m. at Old Skoolz or online at www. argusleader.com/linklive.

A singer, songwriter and musician playing guitar and keyboards, Show has been known in the region since he started punk band No Direction and roots-country band Flag With Hank in the 1980s. Violet began in 1990 and was on and off for most of the decade.

Show did some solo work between bands but also tried other projects like the All Getouts, playing all '60s cover material. That band had an exclusive gig in Las Vegas. Other bands included a power pop group Catholic Family Radio, and later The Working Poor featured acoustic styles with Show on accordion, twice opening for Steve Earle.

In the past few years, Show has played in new bands Body Electric and Oxford Comma, but these days he's working with two longtime musician friends to explore new musical directions. Usually Eric Nelson is on bass, Show on guitar or keyboard and Paul Erickson on guitar. Others may be added.

"I've been listing to a lot of electronica and pop music, but really all kinds of stuff," Show says. "I'll maybe incorporate it into what I've done but want to work on new material, not really re-dress old songs."

"Family is the first priority, and there's work - got to put food on the table. Life gets in the way of the art sometimes," says Show, who works at LodgeNet.

"But I've been really fortunate with a lot of people I played with," he says. "I love all those guys. They're good human beings, and I'm glad to know them."
