Subaru is recalling certain 2012 model year Legacy sedans and Outback wagons due to side curtain airbags that may not deploy in the event of a crash. A total of 381 vehicles are affected by this recall, all of which were manufactured between December 1 and December 23, 2011.

These vehicles may be equipped with side curtain airbags that contain an incorrect propellant mixture for the initiator component used, resulting in insufficient output of compressed gas.

We don't need to tell you why having faulty airbags is a bad thing. Subaru will notify its owners and will replace the car's side curtain airbags free of charge. The recall is expected to fully kick off by April, and concerned owners can contact Subaru at 1-800-782-2783 for more information. NHTSA's official statement is available after the jump, as well.

SUBARU IS RECALLING CERTAIN MODEL YEAR 2012 LEGACY AND OUTBACK VEHICLES, MANUFACTURED FROM DECEMBER 1, 2011, THROUGH DECEMBER 23, 2011. THESE VEHICLES MAY BE EQUIPPED WITH SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAGS THAT CONTAIN AN INCORRECT PROPELLANT MIXTURE FOR THE INITIATOR COMPONENT USED, RESULTING IN INSUFFICIENT OUTPUT OF COMPRESSED GAS.

SUBARU WILL NOTIFY OWNERS, AND DEALERS WILL REPLACE ONE OR BOTH SIDE CURTAIN AIR BAG MODULES, FREE OF CHARGE. THE SAFETY RECALL IS EXPECTED TO BEGIN DURING OR BEFORE EARLY-APRIL 2012. OWNERS MAY CONTACT SUBARU AT 1-800-782-2783.

SUBARU'S RECALL NUMBER IS WVZ-36. OWNERS MAY ALSO CONTACT THE NATIONAL HIGHWAY TRAFFIC SAFETY ADMINISTRATION'S VEHICLE SAFETY HOTLINE AT 1-888-327-4236 (TTY 1-800-424-9153), OR GO TO HTTP://WWW.SAFERCAR.GOV .Related Gallery2012 Subaru OutbackNews Source:

Only 381 units. Not exactly an earthshaking issue. Compare to tens of thousands of VW recall units for immediately life-threatening defects such as transmission "flash of death" , HPFP grenading, engine fires, etc. etc. etc.

These cars are very good looking in person. I would just say lose the short-lived, headlamps as big as the fender, design and mimic ford's Fusion lamps.

Not the first time they have had to recall vehicles because of side airbag issues. Except the other issue was a few years ago and involved them being installed improperly and the curtain would deploy at barely half length. Hopefully no one has had a real life experience with this current issue.

A 200 is just a more sedate sebring, bleh. By works of art do you mean excessively huge and blocky? Then yes. The legacy looks and IS far superior to the 200 any day and the 300 for that matter.

Subaru's Symmetrical AWD requires a longitudal engine mount with the engine in front of the front drive shafts. Unless Subaru finds another way to repackage it without giving up the symmetry, there will always be a big overhang on AWD Subarus.
