If there were any fairness in the cold, hard sport of college football, Jim Tressel would?ve been the one to sort through the wreckage that is Ohio State?s offense. Then, and only then, could he have transitioned into whatever weird football semi-existence he appears to have now.
What do the Buckeyes have at the quarterback position? A glaring problem that will beget season-long disaster. What?s interim head coach Fickell?s plan to correct it?
?I think we?ve got to do a great job at sitting down and figuring out how we need to move forward and where our focus is going to be with the guys we have and how we can get the ball into different guys? hands and what we can do to be successful,? was Fickell?s nearly incomprehensible answer, so White House spokesman-like in its hollowness and lack of structure that it actually was quite amazing.
Terrelle Pryor should be the one taking it on the chin, but he?s long gone, as you well know. So here is Bauserman, a fifth-year senior who, before Pryor went away, was on track to exit the program without having made a dent. And here is Miller, a true freshman who may or may not have a lot of potential but clearly ought not be on the field yet.
It doesn?t matter if he worries about the fans or not. Who could have time to worry about anything aside from his 2-of-14 passing for 13 yards in a 24-6 loss to a Miami team most previous Buckeyes squads would?ve taken apart?
Somehow, the 17th-ranked Buckeyes have to rebound from all of this. They have Colorado and Michigan State the next two weekends in Columbus, and if they aren?t careful they?ll be irrelevant before their visit to Nebraska on Oct. 8.
Ohio State coach Luke Fickell needs to find answers for an offense that completed only four passes on Saturday night against Miami. (AP Photo)It?s hard to imagine this offense playing against that defense. Hard to imagine it without shuddering.
It?s not just that Bauserman and Miller?who skidded and crashed into things like a puppy on a linoleum floor?were terrible. Have you ever heard of a team not having any player with more than one reception? Safe to assume OSU?s pass-catchers weren?t running free like Jerry Rice and John Taylor.
Worse yet, the defense gave up over 100 yards rushing to Miami sophomore Lamar Miller?in the first quarter. In all, the Buckeyes? vaunted front was plowed through to the tune of 240 yards rushing by a team that, let?s be honest, doesn?t know how to play with the football that much better than Ohio State does.
?There were a couple of problems that shouldn?t happen,? is how Harris, a senior who was suspended for the season opener, described his performance.
?We just beat the Ohio State Buckeyes 24-6,? Al Golden said after his first win as coach of the Canes. ?There ain?t no half-full glass here.?
Fine. After all Golden has endured off the field since taking what turned out to be a crummy job, he?s entitled to some sunniness in his outlook. But Miami?s passing game is silly-bad.
