When Mariah Carey tweeted that pic of her hubby Nick Cannon laid up in the hospital around New Year's, then we heard that he was suffering from "mild kidney failure," the general reaction was basically, "Huh?!" After all, Cannon's only 31, seemed to be in perfectly normal, if not awesome health (he explained he had a grueling fitness routine just before the incident), and also, what the hell is "mild kidney failure"?! The first and last words in that phrase seem totally at odds with one another, no?
Well, the happy news is that Cannon is a-okay these days. He hosted NBC's Super Bowl pre-show last night, and said, "This is a great place to get back and debut the healthy Nick ... I am 100 percent feeling good right now." Awesome! Still ... while Cannon noted that he's changed his diet since the hospitalization, the details on what triggers something like what he experienced remain a bit fuzzy.
As it turns out, the more correct term for what Cannon was suffering from is acute kidney injury (also known as acute renal failure), which is the sudden loss of your kidneys' ability to perform their main function of eliminating excess fluid and salts (electrolytes) as well as waste material from your blood. Judging from how Cannon described the lead-up to his hospitalization, it sounds like a combination of stress, illness, and perhaps even medication caused the radio DJ's immune system to turn on him and attack his kidneys. Ugh! But it also bears noting: There are various other factors that can contribute to the condition, even in young, healthy people like Cannon, such as blood clots or cholesterol deposits that block blood flow to the kidneys.
As long as this story is in the news, it couldn't hurt for experts to chime in and offer up some tips on how young, healthy people could avoid a situation like Cannon's. I suspect the biggest takeaway to be that when you come down with a cold, rest is best! You shouldn't "stock up on cold meds" and "try to be Superman," like Cannon said he did pre-kidney injury. Sometimes we don't want to face the fact that we're sick, but just look at Nick. Sometimes denial only ends up hurting you more in the long run!
Definitely freaky, but it's reassuring to hear that he now seems to be getting the treatment he needs to manage his health. Here's hoping Nick continues to stick to his doctor's orders and continues to feel well.
Kidney problems are no joke. I have horrible kidneys, it all started when I was 16, told I would go into renal failure by time I was 30, they were right. It is painful and debilitating and can happen at any age no matter how healthy one seems to be. For me, the pain that comes with my kidney issues is far worse than labor ever was.
