When Mission: Impossible 3 hit theaters in in 2006, it was the beginning of what looked like the end of Tom Cruise?s career. Cruise had been acting ?erratic? over the past few months. He had famously jumped on Oprah Winfrey?s couch because of his enthusiasm over his new relationship with Katie Holmes. He had a very public fight with Brooke Shields over the use of antidepressants and was more outspoken than every about Scientology.
Viacom head Sumner Redstone blamed Cruise?s behavior on the lackluster box office performance of Mission: Impossible 3 and severed Paramount?s ties with Cruise.
Since then Cruise?s movies have underperformed at the box office. Mission: Impossible 3 actually ended up earning $400 million at the box office. The closest he?s come to that in the past five years is last year?s Knight & Day which brought in $262 million globally.
With Mission: Impossible ? Ghost Protocol thought Cruise is proving that it?s never wise to count the movie star completely out. Paramount (now on good terms with Cruise again) rolled out the film last week in limited (mostly IMAX) release and the movie brought in a healthy $15 million at the box office. That made the film the highest-grossing limited release debut ever beating out Bridget Jones: The Edge of Reason (for real). This weekend the film will expand 3,400 theater and Exhibitor Relations expects it will top the five-day holiday box office with $37 million. That might not sound like a lot (consider the recent Harry Potter movie opened to $170 million over three days), but it?s enough to put the movie on track for healthy earnings. The film outbuzzed the Sherlock Holmes sequel last week and it?s getting great reviews. Mission: Impossible 4 earns a 97 out of 100 on Rotten Tomatoes.
Cruise has been playing the ultimate movie star promoting the movie. Recent tabloid photos show Cruise ice skating with his daughter, Suri. There have been no Scientology scandals ? only glamorous movie stars at exotic locations like Mumbai and Dubai.

you are reaching with your article. I have been watching Cruise for years?..but he is letting his personnal life interfer with his move life. I turned him off years ago (Risky Business was a rockin? movie). He can?t separate and the public will???.separate that is??.from his movies.
I really think he?s trying to rein it in and that his public image is improving. Plus I think people always underestimate Cruise. He?s still a massive movie star abroad and that will keep the studios casting him. If this film is a winner and he gets another few good ones under his belt ? he could be well on his way to a serious comeback.
I agree with you Dorothy he?s been quieter the past year or about his links to the church of scientology. I?m not surprised he?s trying to distancing himself from the church of scientology, it?s a hell of a black mark.
Will he make it? Well as you say if this film is a winner and he gets a few other good films under his belt he will be making for a come back. Bit like saying if team A scores more touch downs than team B they will win; if it happens it will be true but it hasn?t happened yet.
I?m not sure Tom Cruise is out of the woods yet as regards the cult of scientology. That said this film has everything going for it in terms of hype (reviews on popular web sites ? vocal support by other famous people in selected countries), timing (India first and so on) and (lack of) competition. The film also has a good director and a good collaboration with Simon Pegg; that will draw a fair amount of Brit fans despite Tom Cruise.
This film is almost certain to make a profit even with the taint of Tom Cruise?s misguided financial support of the church of scientology, an organisation widely recognised as corrupt and abusive.
The film opened in India where the crowds of adoring fans all but converted to scientology according to local press; even in India it seems Tom Cruise = the church of scientology. No matter there was much fan fare amid rumours the crowd had been paid to cheer, a common practice in that country apparently.
The film opens in the Uk on Boxing Day, day after Xmas day, when the British public are at their least decearning, being full of turkey and mince pies and a strong desire for refreshing entertainment.
This film has all the wind behind it that one could muster. It?s not one I?ll bother with but the film ought to do significantly better than the past couple of MI films.

I think you are being premature in claiming that Cruise has repaired his image and reclaimed his throne. Let?s wait for the numbers before uncorking the champayne.
Has anyone else noticed?? there has been an awful lot of prime time tv advertising pushing the trailer for this movie. I mean A LOT! It?s on the magnitude of political ads just before the election. I wonder who is paying for all that expensive advertsing? Maybe Cruise himself?
Wow, I can see there are some people who would rather back a druggie actor with no talent than a real actor who actually tries to do some good! I can?t wait to say to all the nay sayers your opinion doesn?t count when it comes to talent. It?s funny to see the most narrow minded prejudice people are Americans. The kind that teach hate and ignorance because someone is different you all should be so proud of yourself! The only thing missing is a gas chamber to kill him with! Tom Cruise was the only person speaking out against drugging children. Guess what there are currently 300,000 babies that have been born with missing limbs, experiencing heart attacks and strokes, spinabifida because the doctor had them taking pyschotropic drugs while they were pregnant. These babies will never have a full life but the one they have will be horrifying! Cruise was the one who kept pushing the fact that these drugs were bad for kids and if it is proven that they are bad for kids then of course they are awful for fetuses. I am not a Scientologist but I salute Mr Cruise for all the children he has saved, my grandson was one of them. Even if Mr Cruise hadn?t saved my grandson I would hope that I wouldn?t attack him for being in love with his wife and supporting his religion.
I live in Los Angeles and I'm lucky enough to write about the thing I love most: movies. I'm a graduate of Vassar College and Northwestern University and I've been working at Forbes since 2001. For a good chunk of the year I obsess over celebrity paydays for the Celebrity 100 list. The rest of the year I'm working the beat. If I'm not behind my computer or out on an interview you can find me at the beach with my two kids ... or at the movies. Follow me on Twitter DorothyAtForbes.
