Submit this storydigg reddit stumble CHICAGO ? Illinois Sen. Mark Kirk has left the Chicago hospital where he was treated after his stroke last month and has been transferred to a rehabilitation center.

Dr. Richard Harvey of the Rehabilitation Institute of Chicago says a team of experts will spend the next few days assessing the 52-year-old Republican's condition. They will also design a rehabilitation program for him.

On Tuesday, the senator's neurosurgeon said swelling in Kirk's brain had subsided and a portion of his skull that had been removed was reattached.

05:32 AM on 02/13/2012 Gradually, the realization sinks in that this stroke is so debilitating that this Senator must step down for the common good. If his condition is covered up, it will do injustice to his constituents, specifically and nation generally..

07:14 AM on 02/12/2012 Maybe when he recovers he'll understand the importance of healthcare and be mindful of how the government provided health care helped him.

08:19 PM on 02/11/2012 Second those well wishes! I had a brain aneurysm rupture in May! I hope your doing well! They gave me botox shots in my arm yesterday to stop muscle spasms. The spasms stopped but my arm doesn't look any younger!:

02:50 PM on 02/12/2012 Then you know that it's more important to treat others as humans as well rather than fodder for re-election. He's been my congressman for a long time before becoming IL Senator. While a good man, he's an opportunist first.

05:36 PM on 02/12/2012 I was (and am) more impressed by his story than by his politics. He is a human and deserves our support. would hate this even it happened to ''W'' or his VP, Darth.

06:19 PM on 02/11/2012 Did not vote for him but wish him all the best and a full recovery. My thoughts to the family, as well. I just hope that his personal experience makes him a bit more symphathetic to the need of a decent health care system for all of us.

05:46 PM on 02/11/2012 I must say I am proud to be a liberal, progressive, democrat... Of the comments I have read the majority are very respectful. It's soo great to be with the folks that take the high ground; I can only imagine what Republicans would being saying if the party roles were reversed...

"Rest assured Americans that medical expenses for the beloved Senator will not cost taxpayers any dimes because he doesn't believe in government care." As a conservative Republic'CONS', he is mindful of the people money.

03:53 PM on 02/11/2012 Am pleased that Senator Kirk is progressing. Am also happy for him that he has his government sponsored health insurance to make sure he gets the best possible care. And will he receive his salary as a Senator while he recovers???? Will he be expected to pass a drug test as Romney and others have suggested is appropriate for anyone receiving gov't funds????

04:27 PM on 02/11/2012 I'm glad and praying for his speedy recovery, too. Rehabilitation as well as stroke intensive care is expensive,Everyone should be able to afford these healthcare measures whether a senator or a regular Joe. The legislators have special preveileges in terms of care under their insurance. No wonder the GOP/TP and others are looking after nation's health so 'vigilantly'.
