Perhaps celebrating a push toward the mobile space with its traditionally desktop-bound OS -- or maybe just doing its best to further confuse the similar naming conventions with its forthcoming smartphone operating system -- Microsoft today sent out invites for a February 29th Mobile World Congress event that will see the launch of its Windows 8 Consumer Preview. Details are scarce about the two-hour event, but you'd better believe that we'll be there in Barcelona with bells on.

They can keep this POS, Im going thru a refresh now just trying to ween people off of XP after that Vista drama.Problem is that Microsoft is trying to do to much to be mobile computing flexible while killing there core users.
Jesus... Metro UI is nightmare on a desktop.... it's even a nightmare on a mobile but on a desktop???! Who came up with the idea? Balmer??! The're trying to force us to use Metro just to promote their lame Windows Phone system.... I'm staying with Windows 7 or disabling Metro in Windows 8, we'll see.
I have and I have to agree. For high level stuff like quickly getting to your email and bouncing on to the net I found I actually used the metro UI to full effect (I wasn't expecting to in any way, shape or form so it was a pleasant surprise).
There have been a number of comments on here about people not liking the design - I know for a fact that Microsoft have spent vast sums of money on developing the Metro UI user experience and when you use it you can really tell. It may not be the prettiest (although I happen to like the version on windows 8, the wp7 version is boring as hell) but it definitely is useable.
I am going to pick up Win 8 for the insanely fast boot times and added stability/ enhancements but, like many others, I really dislike the Metro interface outside of tablets or my WP7 phone. So here's a link to show you how to disable the Metro interface and boot straight into the desktop. I do not know if this will work for the Consumer preview but we will see.
Just try and use it with the Metro interface, its so much better once you start using it to its advatage, I love it, and hate going back to Win 7 computers at work.
This is like the windows Media center edition...I have never heard a single person use the media center UI to open anything...How many people do u think that are actually gonna use this same shitty tile theme! I HATE Metro UI, I think the entire User Interface was designed in 2 days...Most lazy and lackluster design I have seen across any platform! On Pc this is gonna Suck So Bad!!
I love how Engadget is hiding the address while all the other tech blogs show it with no issues. What are you guys afraid off? That we storm the place and tell everybody that Engadget invited us? Geez, grow up.
Personally I think Win 8 will be the new Vista. Businesses won't buy it. That's a given. Windows 7 will be law of the land for at least 7 years. Metro is AMAZING for mobile platforms but on a desktop it's just too much.
First let me say I disagree with you, however, you do realize that we are going more and more mobile with are computing right? In 2 years, most people wont even compute on a typical desktop but Windows will still be at the center of it.
I'd go with 8GB to be safe. The Dev preview was over 5.5GB, though it included Visual Studio bits as well. Hard to say exactly how big the Consumer Preview will be.
Thanks, If they have a consumer preview version of Windows 8 in a 3.7 gig size and a 4 gig USB Flash Drive is actually formatted 3.7 gigs would that just barley fit on it or would an 8 gig on still be safer?
I'm just sayin 8GB is safer. More useful too, there are other disk images I work with that are greater than 4GB, so I always keep an 8GB flash drive handy.
who created time? why is February the extra day designated for? you have these blocks of days why not split 365/12 and bedone with it.
The extra day is used to offset the imprecise orbit of the earth around the sun. It isn't exactly 365 days so a day is either added or taken away from the calendar year in order to compensate for this irregularity.
Lookin forward to givin this a run in preview. Didn't take time like I should have with dev preview, but this will have a bit more baked into it to check out I'm sure.
And to the individuals so concerned with desktop functionality, please consider the fact that a desktop is nothing revolutionary; its a workspace, OSX, Linux, Win all have them. MS is only going to showcase and focus on newer elements or design changes for now, so they can get feedback on what works or doesn't work. I don't think the functionality of a desktop in and of itself is high on the list at the moment, cause its a been there done that feature.
Metro Interface = priority (front end of xplatform unity) The convention of thought right now is that tablets and mobile devices will not outright replace the desktop in all environments, but that most users by percentage will spend more time on their mobile devices. Metro UI is about trying to provide a unified experience across multiple environments. Turning it on and off will definately be an option; business environments are more apt to only want desktop by default.
awesome! its like a birthday present! awwwww yeeeeeah i hope this runs ok on my ghetto rig, Win8 dev preview lagged the crap out of its athlon64 and x1600 graphics card :
Early previews are always slow, especially dev versions. The consumer preview will probably be along the lines of what Microsoft used to call "Beta" which they usually release about 6 months ahead of the actual release. As long as they don't find any show stoppers.
Even though I have tried Windows 8 and it is good: Never dual boot if you have xp because you ant boot back into xp. I hope they fix the boot system so you dual boot from earlier versions of windows. If you have tried dual boot with windows 7, can you tell me if it works?
