Kyle Orton
By Chad MorganThere was some talk a couple years back that the Washington Redskins were interested in acquiring Kyle Orton from the Denver Broncos. Fast forward and now there is new word that Kyle Orton is again on the Redskins quarterback radar.
The quarterback situation is certainly a big topic in the nation?s capitol this off season, one that is probably talked about on the streets of DC just as much as the affairs of the country. The thing is that the Redskins are in dire need of a quarterback and with the talk of Dan Snyder possibly drafting RG III and the team interested in the services of Peyton Manning, what could hurt if Kyle Orton was thrown into the mix.
The latest word is that Snyder and head coach Mike Shannahan have discussed the possibility of going after the disgruntled Kyle Orton after starting the 2011 season as the starter for the Broncos only to be replaced by Tim Tebow and Tebow-mania. Orton would get picked up by the Kansas City Chiefs and would lead the upset of the then undefeated Green Bay Packers in his first start and would get revenge against the Broncos in the last game of the regular season but going into 2012 does not have a guaranteed contract. Could Kyle Orton be the next quarterback of the Washington Redskins?
Orton?s roughly two and a half year stint with the Denver Broncos certainly was not indicative of his overall career stats. He went 12-21 as a starter over that time but it was with the Chicago Bears that Orton proved that he was a good QB. He went 21-12 as a starter in four seasons with the Bears and while he was injury prone and missed the Super Bowl year that Rex Grossman took the team to the big game against the Tony Dungy led Colts, Orton has solid numbers with 80 career TD?s and 57 INT?s and if the Redskins could put a solid offensive line in front of him, well they would certainly have a very proficient quarterback.
You certainly have to look at the numbers when it comes to Kyle Orton. He has 70 career starts and averages over a touchdown a game and less than an interception. When he is healthy and is able to play the whole season, there is not many quarterbacks who have played as well as Kyle Orton over the past five years. The injury question is what has to be kept in mind but the word is that Snyder and Company are interested in Orton and they believe that he could play an integral part in the future of the franchise. The Redskins faithful are certainly waiting anxiously as to what exactly the team is going to do about their quarterback situation. Are they going to trade up and go after RGIII? Are they going to go after Peyton Manning who missed all of last season with a major injury or are they going to go after the free agent in Kyle Orton. This is the big question and the answer will be up to Dan Snyder and Mike Shannahan.
