Amazon released an update for its Kindle Fire tablet Wednesday, offering possible fixes to issues outlined by consumers before recipients of one of the year's hottest holiday gifts unwrap them.
In a news release, Amazon said the update seeks to improve the device's touch-screen responsiveness, offer the opportunity to change the display items on the interface's main "carousel," and adds password-lock capability on Wi-Fi access, while improving fluidity and performance.
The $199 Kindle Fire has been a big seller this holiday season, with Amazon recently announcing that it is selling more than a million Kindle devices a week in the past three weeks.
However, some consumers and reviewers have complained about the Kindle Fire's performance, with slow Web loading, sluggish touch-screen performance and lack of customization options among the most frequent complaints.
Yelp, a consumer-review website that is planning an IPO, said about 6.7 million user submissions are being filtered from view or have been removed from its listings.
for violating the website's terms of service and about 1.8 million had been removed, the company said Wednesday in a filing with the Securities and Exchange Commission. Yelp said it uses filtering software to ensure the credibility of reviews.
User reviews on the site increased to 22.4 million in the first nine months of 2011 from 13.5 million in the same period a year earlier. Filtered and removed reviews are included in the total, because users can still access them by clicking a link on an individual business's page on Yelp's site, the San Francisco-based company said.
Solyndra, the bankrupt Fremont solar-panel maker, won court approval of a supplemental auction of its core assets if it fails to find a buyer willing to continue operations at an earlier auction.
U.S. Bankruptcy Judge Mary Walrath on Wednesday in Wilmington, Del., gave the company permission to hold an auction in February for a piecemeal sale of its core assets should the going concern sale fall through.
The solar-panel maker has twice delayed the auction of its business after failing to draw any acceptable bids, court documents show.
