At his press conference today following the Colts 23-20 loss to the Steelers last night, head coach Jim Caldwell said that quarterback Kerry Collins is still being 'evaluated' after suffering a possible concussion. No one seems to know when this concussion happened, but many speculate it was in the late-third quarter after Collins took a hit from Steelers linebacker James Farrior.

Curtis Painter came into the game, replacing Collins, and promptly missed Pierre Garcon on a gimme touchdown throw. Painter then fumbled the ball on the next series after getting sacked. The fumble was scooped up by the Steelers and returned for a touchdown.

With Collins' status uncertain, it is possible that Painter could start at quarterback on Monday Night Football next week against the Buccaneers in Tampa Bay. If he does, it will be Painter's first career start.

Prior to leaving the game, Collins was mostly ineffective despite good protection from his offensive line, something he didn't get much of the first two weeks of the season.

by Mr. Indianapolis Colts on Sep 26, 2011 2:32 PM EDT up reply actions 1 recs You conveniently left out the 10 play 80 yard TD drive Painter led us on... Collins failed to move the ball at all?PERIOD. He has had 2 1/2 games to do it and hasn?t been able to (besides garbage time). Painter has much more upside?.let him start.

by avoiceofreason on Sep 26, 2011 2:28 PM EDT reply actions Concussed? I think the Colts are confusing the dazed look he has had since week 1 to a concussion.

by avoiceofreason on Sep 26, 2011 2:30 PM EDT reply actions I have to agree that the sack/fumble is on Costanzo He completely whiffed on the block. It?s not like he held Harrison up for a while and Painter held the ball too long. Harrison ran right by him and into Painter?s blindside untouched.

Yeah, he missed the first pass to Garcon (BTW, no guarantee Garcon makes that catch given his propensity to miss the easy ones) but the guy is put in the game cold and is getting no snaps in practice.

More telling to me is he engineers an 80 yard drive with Polamalu roaming around and coming with his (substantial ) hair on fire every play. I?

by EVLGNUS on Sep 26, 2011 2:39 PM EDT up reply actions Half the blame to Castonzo, half to Painter Yes Castonzo got beat, basically for the only time all night by a former Defensive MVP. But the play was a quick drop, quick pass play, which wasn?t open. Instead of just ducking out and living to fight another play, Painter ignored the proverbial internal clock, and he paid for it.

We?ve all become so used to Manning just dropping like he?d been shot when that happens, it?s difficult to assign blame. They both were to blame on that play, which I think was a 2nd and 2.

The problem with Painter all along was his pocket presence, and in this case he should have stepped up in the pocket, rather than stand there like a statue before he got hit. Garcon was open underneath, but he could have been the 3rd read on the play, and it never got there. There was absolutely nobody on the left side had he stepped up in the pocket.

by BigBlueDawg on Sep 26, 2011 2:43 PM EDT reply actions The Front Office tried You gota give that. It didn't work we gotta move on. Painter sure as heck isn't the answer . he makes 1 out of 4 or 5 throws for gods sake !

atleast Painter knows the offense better and has watched peyton for 3 years and knows about the timing..Collins release is way too slow and even if painter throws 1 out of 4 or 5 its better than the alternative of Collins.

by supercolts on Sep 26, 2011 3:45 PM EDT up reply actions I realize that we have to be positive.... But these guys supporting Painter?.wow you all should get an award. The guy had at least 4 passes 10 feet short or 10 feet long. I do believe it was addai who capped off the wonderful 80 yard drive with a run not a pass. He had probably 3 good completions. his first series led to a touchdown for the other team?I realize the fault with the rookie OL but somehow I doubt manning would have taken that sack. Now despite collins not getting a touchdown?he did have several drives?defenses get more tired at the end of the game by the way.

Now I?m not sold on collins and you could argue why give the guy the ball when he is one year and retired when we can use this to develop painter. REASON: As of now though collins is still the better qb and gives us the better chance of winning? However we aren?t winning so at some point like BBS has pointed out?.we need to really see what we?ve got. I think if we are 6-7 losses into the season?painter or hartline will get the nod. Problem with painter is he has done nothing minus one drive (one lousy drive) to prove he can lead us to a win ((what was his qb rating before the game? I believe it was single digits))?.a number one pick perhaps?but not a win. Hell even Sorgi always looked more confident and did better.
