Joyful Noise

Last week on Feb. 8, Confidante, the on-campus student literary magazine, hosted an award ceremony for eight students that were acknowledged for their submissions to the magazine.

Writer and director Todd Graff tells the story of two strong-willed women who are vital to a small town church choir that?s aiming to win a national choir competition.

This film depicts the life of Vi Rose Hill, played by Queen Latifah, and her two children Olivia Hill, (Keke Palmer) and Walter Hill (Dexter Darden) who is autistic. They struggle with her husband leaving the family to go into the military. G.G. Sparrow, played by Dolly Parton, is a key contributor to the church and has a surprise visit from her wayward grandson. The grandson causes some things to change within the choir, hoping to help the choir come out of the old way of singing. However, Via Rose, the newly appointed Choir Master, wants to keep things plain, simple, and traditional.

My emotional walls were being bulldozed while I watched ?Joyful Noise.? A memorable line, ?I would call you stubborn, but that would be an insult to mules? sticks in my head. The back and forth rhetoric between Queen Latifah and Parton was true comedy. This film was full of colorful characters, music and good humor. If you need a good laugh, cry or a mixture of the two, I recommend this film. Just keep a tissue handy. I give this film four out of five stars. I am holding back on the fifth star only because there were some holes in the plotline. Nonetheless, I recommend this film.
