Companies will appear in your news feed as if they are your Facebook friends to share whatever message it is they're trying to get across.

You can expect to see the ads appear starting in January. Facebook indicates that you'll only see ads from brands you've interacted with via likes, comments, or being a fan.

Facebook spokesperson Annie Ta said, "You will never a post from a page you are not a fan of, or from people who are not your friends. We want to be really thoughtful about this, so we'll have a lot of rate limits in place."

UPDATE -- A Facebook spokesperson reached out to us with the following details: "Since Sponsored Stories are stories that are already eligible to appear in News Feed organically, any type of Sponsored Story would be eligible to be featured in News Feed. Sponsored Stories respect your and your friends' privacy settings and people will only see stories about people and Pages they've already connected to.

We realize that people are more accustomed to seeing certain types of stories in News Feed and Sponsored Stories will remain consistent with the most common types of stories."
