When a kidnapping occurs, the family and the community is shocked and grieves ? as well as the victim. It is a wrenching and unfathomable crime, the sense of loss is extreme. Yet, the horror for the victim must exceed that of the family and community. Elizabeth Smart, 14 years old, was kidnapped from her bedroom in the middle of the night, June 5, 2002. In this post, we will be exploring both Solar Returns and Progressed Daily Angles charts. Before we do this, let us consider what we can expect or not expect from these charts. First, the kidnapper determines the date, time, situation of the attempt to kidnap a victim. The victim may affect this decision by their own comings and goings. Second, because the kidnapping is an intrusion into one?s life, we might see the charts as being limited in foretelling or describing an exterior-oriented event. Third, the nature of the kidnapper?s intent and the victims experience of the event may be symbolized differently than we expect. With all of that in mind, let us look at the precession-corrected Solar Return of 2001 prior to the kidnapping.
Can a Solar Return predict or indicate an extreme event such as a kidnapping? The MC (23 Gemini) opposes natal Uranus: Upsets, surprises will be part of Elizabeth?s life in the coming year and will involve the home (4th house). Transiting Uranus is in the natal 1st house and the S/R?s 6th house: This indicates a personal experience and the involvement of any number of 6th house indicators ? workmen, health issues, pets, office workers, duty, maintenance. As it was later discovered, the kidnapper (Brian Mitchell) had worked at the Smart home at an earlier time. This MC opp. n/Uranus squares the Ascendant, emphasizing that these upsets and surprises will be personal.
Transiting Mars at the natal Ascendant points to anger and attack. Natal Mars opposes natal Moon: We can interpret this literally; a female is attacked. Or we can say that one dominates an emotional situation. Both are appropriate.
Now, how does t/Mars conjoining t/Neptune in the 1st fit into the picture? Deceitful actions would be one appropriate interpretation. For this project, we can somewhat discount the natal MC conjoining natal Venus as this points to a lovely person (a young lady at that time) being somewhat public. Of course, her natural pleasing appearance could have been the attraction for the kidnapper rather than the well-off family representing a ransom possibility.
We now have to ask ourselves, ?Do these configurations specifically point to a kidnapping?? If it suggested that, would we actually tell a family or a client that? Even if we were in a dialog with the family, what kind of normal family context would suggest a kidnapping? I doubt it would come up in 9,999 out of 10,000 cases. The only rational thing that a wary astrologer could do would be to narrow down the possibilities by pinpointing the dates when such symbols would actuate, and then look for the supporting details to see what might occur at that place and time.
