Denver Broncos

Posted by Whoppixian on Monday, 22 August, 2011, 1:36 AM

How hard is it for a Denver Broncos fan to watch the Oakland Raiders come into Denver and physical dominate the home team? That must have been what the 1960's were like. Disgusting. Whether it's 59-14 or 23-20, losing to the Raiders at home is just something I can't stand.

Worse, it was Kyle Orton who played a big role in the loss. All those weeks of training camp devoted to him being the game manager we all (mostly all of us) thought he could be under John Fox. Granted, the offensive line played one its worst games in recent memory, but I lost count of how many open wide receivers Orton just flat out missed last week. He looked like a guy who was just trying too hard and he certainly didn't look comfortable leading this team.

That said, and this isn't a Kyle Orton bash, the entire team let the fans down in this first game. The defense did its job, that much is sure. They stopped the Raiders when they needed to be stopped and kept this game much closer than it should have been. The offense just didn't execute. Thirteen points...at home...on Monday Night Football...against the hated Oakland Raiders who soiled your home ground last season with 59 points. Disgusting.

So where does that leave us? Tim Tebow. Ha! Just kidding. This team has to lose a lot more games before Fox starts wondering what Tebow might be able to do under center, so for now this game is all about the offense bouncing back from the biggest let down in over ten months - for us fans anyway.

Personally, I think the defense will keep the game close. They are not yet great, but they are no longer the doormats of 2010 either. So this game against the Cincinnati Bengals is going to come down to the Broncos offense. Can they execute? Can Orton bounce back? Can the OL man the hell up? Those are all questions we need to find answers for tomorrow. I will say this, if the Broncos lose this game its going to hurt bad. Orton's reign will end much sooner - fairly or not, most fans will undoubtedly blame him. It is what it is, the rest of us just have to hope for the best.

If you want Tim Tebow to play sooner rather than later, then root for the Broncos to lose this game - it will make the Tebow era begin much sooner than it would have begun. As for me, I think Orton will actually bounce back and the Broncos will win big tomorrow, 31-13. If only because a loss would mean 5 more weeks of angry and pissed off fans. A win at least makes the debate go away for a few days...

Moving away from the depressing task of writing about the 2011 Broncos, I've compiled a short list of my most favorite Broncos quotes of all time. This was purred by Orton's, "I'm not going to cry over spilt milk" comment that really pissed me off at first, but now it just is what it is. Orton doesn't cry over spilt milk, but I am certain he cries over wet balls. I would too. Anyway, here are some of my favorites of all time!

I was openly weeping when these words were spoken. Was this quote cheesy? Absolutely, but does that matter? Anyone who suffered through the crushing defeats of the 1980's will testify to the unbelievable sense of accomplishment, relief and joy that January 25, 1998 brought to Broncos fans everywhere.

I love this quote because it capped the greatest season of Broncos football I had ever witnessed. I even got to attend the game in San Diego. Little did I know it also capped the end of an era and the beginning of the end of a tradition that had been ingrained in the Broncos organization for thirty years. Hopefully, we'll see a return to that tradition someday...

Few remember that the Denver Broncos had a ten year stretch where they didn't beat the Oakland Raiders a single time. That is twenty straight defeats. It was embarrassing and the hatred for the dirty and often cheating Raiders grew each and every season. The Broncos first broke the losing streak on October 22, 1972 in Oakland's backyard, however it was the 1977 AFC Championship game that meant the most to Broncos fans. Tom Jackson's quote here signified an end of perpetual dominance of the Raiders over the AFC West.

On the day I became a Broncomaniac, Keith Bishop uttered a sentence as the offense took the field down 20-13 in the 1987 AFC Championship game that would begin one of the most famous drives in NFL history. I was eight years old and upon seeing Elway's greatness live on one of the world's biggest stages, I was hooked. I watched Broncos games before that and was a "fan", but I am certain that was the day I became a Broncomaniac. There is a difference between being a fan and a Broncomaniac, without a doubt! In any case, not even the Super Bowl loss to the New York Giantsdamped my mania.

I'll end with the most infamous quote in Broncos history. The half a loaf game would cause Saban to lose his job in 1971. With the game tied 10-10 with the Miami Dolphins, Saban opted to run the clock out and go for the tie rather than to try and win the game. Something unheard of in today's NFL, but in hindsight it was unheard of back then as well. It got so bad during that season that the crowd would throw half loaves of bread onto the field in anger over Saban's rather unfortunate remarks.

by HarvJNep2n on Sep 18, 2011 7:05 AM MDT up reply actions I'm not sure if it was on this site or not, but there was recently a post concerning ?blind side? of left-handed quarterbacks. It is not just a flip of right handed quarterbacks. The right tackle is generally not the guy protecting a left handed quarterbacks ?blind? side. It has to do with how left handed quarterbacks roll out. Maybe one of the really smart guys can help us out here.

"I actually watched the World Cup. I HATE baseball. Hockey?s over. Hey, at least we have the WNBA. Oh, man. I?m making a noose. Want one?"

To a point Defenses are always looking for areas of weakness to concentrate their attack. The blindside of the QB is a natural weakness due to the the reduced ability of the QB to react to pressure coming from that side. That weakness cannot be exploited until you actually reach the QB. In our case we would have a second weakness on Tebow?s blind side ? Orlando Franklin. Until that boy figures out how to pass block, defenses will move players around if necessary to exploit his weakness. Why have my best d line man get absorbed into Clady when I can let him pin his ears back and run over Franklin? If Tebow is to become our starter, then either Franklin has to find some game or we need to find someone that can protect timmy in an area of natural vulnerability.

by Flunkie on Sep 18, 2011 7:19 AM MDT up reply actions Franklin is a guard. I went to the U of Miami game last night (go Canes, we killed Ohio State) and the new LT was much better than Franklin was in pass block. My Univ of Miami fans are thrilled that Franklin is now in the NFL and no longer a college LT? so that should tell you something, just like those 11 QB pressures he allowed on Monday night.

We are rebuilding like it or not. It will take time. Their will be hits and misses on players we draft. I?m going to let this play out for awhile and see the progress. Its gonna take time.

by McGeorge on Sep 18, 2011 7:59 AM MDT up reply actions always b.... I see that McG has become your target daily?(actually, you posted the same comment yesterday). Careful on two fronts?1) He has been awfully good on his predictions, and 2) if he decides to target you, it will not been pretty. McG is a veteran of the DP wars, reclaimed at MHR with a modified approach to posting. Actually, I half understand, though. McG is nothing if not honest, even if it is negative for the Broncos?but he also knows his football and loves his Broncos.

by McGeorge on Sep 18, 2011 12:46 PM MDT up reply actions Maybe Franklin's just being groomed to take over for Kuper in afew years Kuper is getting older and maybe Franklin will be a future RG when the Broncos find a good RT.

by KaptainKirk on Sep 18, 2011 8:00 AM MDT up reply actions In my wildest dreams, EFX draft someone like Kalil or sign a real RT and move Franklin to LG, and improve two spots on our line in one fell swoop. That right there would go a long way toward fixing our o-line problems.

by the new Bradfather on Sep 17, 2011 11:33 PM MDT reply actions You picked a funny photo. Orton doing his usual thing under pressures. I expect more and sooner boos today if he can?t get a TD or two in the first half.

It?s the 1-9 thing that really got me. How is that giving Denver the best chance to win? Tebow is 1-2.. He?d have to lose 7 games in a row to match Orton.

by McGeorge on Sep 18, 2011 8:36 AM MDT up reply actions Sorry Sean but few will agree on that one he put together a drive or two in the 2nd half, but misread wide open receivers, locked onto Lloyd several times, and took 5 sacks when he could?ve thrown the ball away.

I blame 50% of the loss on Orton and 50% on the O-line. But at the end, Orton was too nervous to maintain focus, and capitalize on what Oakland gave him.

by idahobronc on Sep 18, 2011 10:06 AM MDT up reply actions Or it just represents the state of our QB play from Orton. Lot more falling down than making winning plays from Kyle.

by McGeorge on Sep 18, 2011 8:37 AM MDT up reply actions It upset me too...its the 2010 Broncos. I hate the 2010 Broncos?I wanted more from this offense.

Personally, I think we (the Broncos) need to make a decision by mid-season, either we are winning enough to justify keeping Orton as the starter, or, we get a real good look at Tebow to see if he?s the answer.

You got that right. Its exactly what the 60?s and early 70?s were like. I remember the exhiliration of first MNF when the Broncos tied the Raiders.

But last Monday, I was standing near the cash register at a bagel shop on Union Blvd in Lakewood when the cashier said to the lady in front of me who was wearing an orange Broncos sweatshirt, ?Good luck tonight.? The lady smiled and said, ?Thanks? then added with some consternation, ?Monday Night Football.? I added, ?night game.? We both smiled a terse smile knowing the Broncos history of performance on Monday nights and night games generally, but both hoping for something better that night. We didn?t get it.

by KaptainKirk on Sep 18, 2011 8:00 AM MDT up reply actions I had to rec this for the poll! The key to losing respectably today?ok let me revise that?the key for the Broncos to pull off a victory is to do what they couldn?t do for 60 minutes last Monday night: run the football.

Denver?s O-line needs to unleash its inner mean or this will be another long day at SA@MH. On defense, it?s ?next man up? as Fox says. The problem is, the next man up may not even be a 3rd stringer on most other teams.

by Horsepower on Sep 18, 2011 8:43 AM MDT reply actions It's amazing The fan base of Denver has me convinced that I have to find another team to root for. And I never thought that would happen.

I love the Broncos. But I so hate our spoiled impatient and ? yes ? pig ignorant fans, that I feel completely football isolated in this town.

MHR has really taken a hit from it, too. Don?t get me wrong ? there are still useful analyses mixed in with all the garbage posts ? but for the most part, the site has become home to idolators, not Bronco fans.

And yes, I know they?ll deny it, and that someone will pen some passionate defense of his supposed fandom ? and how to criticize the team is the ultimate show of support, blah blah blah ? and it?ll go green, as others rush to clap that poster on the back and agree with him.

I don?t usually put much stock into what the rest of the country is saying. But re: the Broncos, the national media and a number of ex-players now doing commentary are incredulous at how our fans are acting. They, like the coaches and the players, know that Orton is a good football player, and they don?t understand why it is our fans feel the need to run him out of town (because when we had a defense, Orton was a winning QB, simple as that).

Maybe I?ll try rooting for the Broncos and just ignore the fans. But then, what?s the point? Is the sharing a large part of the experience?

Let?s not get complacent and place the blame on the fans. Fans don?t make decisions. 5 years of terrible decisions were not made by the FANS.

As much as I hate the raiders and how much it pains me to admit they were a better team last monday night .It will be interesting to see if the raiders can win in Buffalo today. As bad as we all hated losing to them we had a chance to win the game and it was not a blowout . Maybe we all just can?t admit maybe they have improved from last season and might be a pretty good team and we were not quite the push over we were last year and there may be hope for the rest of the season . If the Broncos can get healthy they may get on a run this team is young with a new coaching staff and it will take a while for it to come together .They will really miss Champ today and I can?t predict a win but there will be improvements in this game . Maybe the whole team was just trying to hard against the raiders and fell into quicksand and could not get out (Shane Falco) .
