She won our hearts when she played quirky and neurotic interior decorator Grace Adler on Will & Grace but Debra Messing has definitely upped her ante in NBC?s new musical drama Smash, a show that revolves around a group of characters who come together to put on a Broadway musical based on the life of Marilyn Monroe. Debra recently opened up about her son Roman and on her desire to sing on the show.
Debra - who plays songwriter/lyricist Julia Houston on the show - admits that although her 7-year-old son is demonstrating some acting talent, she doesn't exactly want him to follow in her footsteps.
"I told him when he was about two weeks old that I?d already decided that he was going to be an architect," she adds. "But that?s fine for now? it?s a hobby, but it?s not what Mama chose for him though."
"I?ve already shot a song," the star reveals. "All I can say is I play the lyricist, so the context and the tone of the singing is very different but they have incorporated song into the very dramatic arc of my character in a way that I think is pretty clever."
