Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab's iPad game Dark Dot has been downloaded over 448,000 timesby Hiranand Sunny Updated 03:56 PM Dec 22, 2011 SINGAPORE - A local game developer has done in two-and-a-half weeks what other app developers can only dream of.

When the Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab launched Dark Dot on Apple's iTunes app store in October, it became the top action game in 48 countries including the United States, China and Singapore.

The iPad game was also the top free app in Singapore, the Philippines, Thailand and Indonesia - edging out other popular apps and games such as Facebook, WhatsApp, Angry Birds and Bejeweled.

The Singapore-MIT GAMBIT Game Lab is an initiative supported by the National Research Foundation in collaboration with the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) and the Media Development Authority of Singapore (MDA).

By identifying and undertaking research that can be implemented and applied by Singapore's digital game industry, it aims to improve the quality of games produced by local developers.

In addition to the success of Dark Dot - which has been downloaded by over 448,000 gamers worldwide - GAMBIT has also created CarneyVale: Showtime for the Xbox 360, which beat 350 entries from 100 countries to win the grand prize in Microsoft's Dream-Build-Play Challenge in 2008.

Asked about its future plans, GAMBIT said it intends to continue prototyping and developing games with the help of research in order to enhance productions by players in the local game industry.

"We're still evaluating the possibilities and opportunities that Dark Dot has created for us," said Ms Hoo Jia Ling, associate producer and leader of the team.
