With CMAT (Common Management Admission Test) becoming compulsory, AIMA (All India Management Association) has high chances of withdrawing MAT entrance exam (Management Aptitude Test), which it has been conducting since 1988.

The first ever CMAT is commencing from February 20 -28, 2012. The test is based on the pattern of GMAT (Graduate Management Aptitude Test) held across the globe. Nearly, 3500 AICTE approved business schools of India will be using CMAT scores for providing admission to various management programs excluding IIMs, which will continue to accept CAT scores for admitting students.

The Indian government is planning to make CMAT, a single national level management entrance test compulsory for all 3500 AICTE approved management colleges. Sources from AIMA reveal that after making CMAT compulsory, it is quite possible that the government will compel AIMA to collaborate with them in reducing the mental pressure of students by withdrawing its MAT entrance test from the AICTE institutes.

AIMA has yet not disclosed any particular time limit for discontinuing MAT. Many AICTE approved B-schools have expressed that MAT is a flexible exam as it is conducted 4 times a year in both online and offline formats and AIMA?s decision to discontinue it in future may come as a blow to many MBA aspirants especially for those coming from small towns.

Sources from AICTE revealed that this is the first year when CMAT will be conducted. The council has decided to conduct it biannually from next year to make it more flexible for management aspirants, parents and business schools.

AIMA sources reveal that it may discontinue MAT in AICTE approved institutes but is currently planning to present it to the autonomous private universities in a different avatar.
