Chargers,

Posted by Whoppixian on Monday, 22 August, 2011, 1:36 AM

The Chargers get run over in the motor city. After a great victory at home over the Ravens, the Chargers came out flat in Detroit. Falling behind early, the Chargers couldn't find a way to get things back in order.

Fans do have every right to be upset about this season. After missing the playoffs last year, most people (including myself) felt this Chargers team would rebound and win the division. Terrible play by Rivers, bad clock management, and too many lackadaisical games doomed this Chargers team.

Garbage time offense: With the Chargers down 24-0 at the half, the offense the entire second half was in garbage mode. The drive to start off the second half was great, the Chargers were never able to close the deal inside the redzone, settling for a FG and turning the ball over on downs. Fans tried to keep hope alive, but the Chargers couldn't deliver.

Philip Rivers: With over 53 pass attempts, Rivers is going to shoulder the blame for the lack of red zone success as well as third down conversions. Those two interceptions at the end of the game were only fitting.

Running game: What running game? The Chargers got down early and Norv never looked back. 50+ pass attempts and 16 rushing attempts (four on the last drive).

Vincent Jackson: He proves once again he's not an elite receiver. For those of you that want to say he was injured, that's just silly. He is a passive receiver, he doesn't attack the ball, and he quits on too many plays. Two catches on seven targets today. Jackson has always had plenty of potential and we have seen glimpses of it, but he has never been able to make that next step into the elite category.

The season: The Chargers tried to keep things interesting, but at the end of the day, they ran out of gas. Bad coaching? Lack of talent? Injuries? Take your pick, but at the end of the day, this Chargers team has not made the playoffs in a weak division the last two seasons.

I would love to see a playmaker on defense, but there are so few real playmakers. I am becoming happier with Barnes as a rushing OLB. I hope we just take the best player available at the spot? quit trying to fill a hole. Get teh best person at your draft position. If we have two safeties, fine. If they are good enough, they will play.

by markper on Dec 24, 2011 6:23 PM PST up reply actions Well I would argue that there is a glaring need for a LB core star. A person who can get in on the QB and a person who can cover a TE? How many times yesterday (past 3 years) has a TE burned the Chargers.

I would argue we need a a star a nose tackle. what i mean is a guy that commands a double team, can hold his ground to stuff the run up the middle.

by markper on Dec 24, 2011 6:18 PM PST up reply actions I'll second that motion I?m willing to risk returning to losing in hopes of getting better, than to continue being mediocre. Norv obviously needs to go. A J? If someone is available, then I?d kick A J to the curb also. He has passed over probowl caliber playrs to draft average to below avrage players.

believe me nothing would make happier unfortunately, we don?t make that decision. if Spanos can justify absorbing the cost of telling Norv to leave, and a better candidate is available, i see Dean pulling the trigger.

by gatesoftds on Dec 24, 2011 5:06 PM PST up reply actions You say that we have seen glimpses of VJs potential how about 3 straight 1000 yard seasons (excluding the contract hold out year). All the elite WRs have up and down games it is the nature of the position. Take a look at the game logs of all the top flight WRs in the NFL and you will start to understand. He dropped ?a? pass today get over it.

Not sure why you are so anti VJ maybe it is just your lack of ability to recognize talent. Speaking of which here are some of your Reggie Bush quotes when I mentioned that you were being a little hard on him:

That's the point ?inspite? of the way the team is ran, he still manages to eek out 1000 yard seasons. imagines if it wre ran by someone that knew how to use him 3 seasons ago.

by gatesoftds on Dec 24, 2011 5:18 PM PST up reply actions He did not get a lot of carries in New Orleans he was one of the NFLs leading receivers at RB while he was there and he made some big game changing plays as a kick returner. Like it or not he was a big part of their superbowl season and he has a ring to show for it.

I am not saying he is a pro bowl player or all time great I just think that most people have him greatly underated, due mostly to how high he was drafted.

by JeromeB on Dec 25, 2011 4:42 PM PST up reply actions ^This players play, coaches coach. VJ does not design the plays. VJ runs the routes he supposed to run. VJ does not throw into double coverage where only the ?defenders? can catch it. Vj does not ?overthrow? himself. .

AGAIN. Every elite receiver drops passes. Every elite receiver gets outfought for the football. but what do you expect, when your fighting for under thrown balls 50% of the time? Calvin Johnson doesn?t have to fight that much.

I have no issue with VJ and I agree that he has seen a lot of bad passes Rivers has had a shitty year, he has thrown a lot of bad passes, thus his high number of picks.

Rivers has been throwing a lot of balls off of his back foot or simply isn?t setting his feet and stepping into his throws. Part of that is the result of pressure but some of it has also been just poor mechanics or being lazy by Rivers.

by gatesoftds on Dec 25, 2011 10:08 PM PST up reply actions dont take me wrong. i really like VJ id love to have him as a Charger next year. He can stretch the field and make big plays. Sure, Rivers had a bad year and made questionable throws, but i didnt see in VJ the talent thats worth the money hes asking.

Jackson said we wanted a big contract but the fact is his not a top 10 wide receiver in this league. He might not even be a top 10 in the AFC.

VJ is quietly having one of his best years 1077 Yards (12th in the league, 5th in AFC), 18.6 Yrd/Catch (4th in the league, 2nd in the AFC behind Floyd), 8 TDs (12th in the league, 3rd in AFC). With one game to play, he could set or tie career highs in Yards and TDs if he has a good game against the Raiders.

You can argue whether he?s ?elite? all you want. But look at the production. It?s going to be tough finding someone either in free agency or the draft that?s going to put up these kind of numbers and add the essential elements he adds to the offense. Why waste a draft pick on an unproven commodity when VJ is producing at this level?

by SuperSalami on Dec 25, 2011 1:59 PM PST up reply actions Sproles wasn't worth the two franchise tags either... however, the Saints were at least ?willing to talk to him? and now he?s having a Pro bowl year, for just under 3 mil. VJ just wanted a long term deal. whether or not VJs? terms were outrageous or not, he was in his rights to ask for money compensatory to the standard set, and his performance on the field, with the upside of his performance increasing and being an important part to the offense.

The point, there was never a ?counter, or low ball offer?, nothing. zip. nada. Again what he was asking for, and what the Chargers were willing to pay him, never materialized.

by gatesoftds on Dec 25, 2011 10:19 PM PST up reply actions VJ also drives drunk, listens to music way too loud and quits on plays..

by Mikeswc on Dec 25, 2011 7:26 AM PST up reply actions Throw Norv out with the wrapping paper tomorrow I am serious, fire him tonight.

by cleyton on Dec 24, 2011 8:23 PM PST up reply actions As far as AJ, I am on the fence with him I won?t be mad if he stays or goes.

by troyd on Dec 24, 2011 5:49 PM PST via mobile up reply actions My first time seeing the Chargers play live During warm-ups, VJ was dropping about every 4th or 5th pass. At that point, I knew it would be a long day for the Chargers. The whole team looked kinda flat during the pregame, they were not very pumped up.

Conversely, the Lions looked like they really wanted to seal the playoffs deal and were extremely fired up. I don?t think the Lions could have played a more complete game.

So FWIW, the loss isn?t really the Chargers ?fault?. Even if they had played well they still probably would have lost. The D never showed up and the O couldn?t get it going fast enough?there always next year (and ruining the Raiders? hopes wouldn?t be that bad of a way to go out)

this is exactly what pissed me off this season You said the Chargers didn look very pumped at warm up. They sure didn look pumped at the game also. We all knew the Lions were gonna bring everything tonight to clinch the playoffs at home, but then Chargers had all the reasons to be excited since they knew the Broncos were being crushed and the Jets were loosing.

This team looked soft all year long and were never a big threat. Actually they were, early in the season, and entered a 6 game losing streak and this week after the Baltimore victory but got crushed today. What im sayin is? you cant get excited with this team.

by Mikeswc on Dec 25, 2011 7:27 AM PST up reply actions what will happen with Gaither? He has played very well. I have actually been impressed with his run blocking. Do we keep him and put Marcus to right tackle? We know Gaither has problems being a right tackle with with the Ravens. But I liked what I saw from Gaither. It is also true that we gave him a lot of help. We chipped his player almost every play. Clary would make a hell of a guard. Is Dielman going to come back?

by cleyton on Dec 24, 2011 8:31 PM PST up reply actions And by the way... if they?re serious about hiring Jeff Fisher, they might as well just keep Norv. Not like it?d be any different.

by 82-0 on Dec 24, 2011 6:39 PM PST reply actions Acee is saying Norv and AJ are "A package deal" In that AJ isn?t inclined to fire Norv, and will be fired with him. We?ll have to see. Also reports that Manusky is out, which is nice. I just hope we can get some decent people in replacement. I would like to see some significant carryover with the position coaches, but who knows.

by aesimpleton on Dec 24, 2011 7:03 PM PST reply actions Fire Norv, Keep AJ Norv is gone. That conversation is over. I would keep AJ but clip his wings a bit especially how he treats players and agents, get him to work on improving his public image. He has done an above average job despite a few misses which every GM has. This team will not win a Super Bowl until the defense gets much better. Like the Pats and Colts we need to match a defensive minded coach with an excellent QB. No Gruden, Norv would be better. He won because someone else built him a great defense. Tampa Bay quickly fell apart after winning the one time under Gruden.. I would take Cowher but I don?t see it happening. He is not coming back this year. Fisher would be a good match for PR. He is still hungry having never won the Super Bowl getting as close as you can without winning it. If not him then some up and coming d coordinator with head coach potential.

by GBGH on Dec 24, 2011 7:15 PM PST reply actions Hopefully Our D will get better when Manusky gets canned just like the Niners D did. It is really time for a change. Adios Norv and AJ and let?s get a stronger willed detail oriented coach, & a more creative GM. The draft needs to focus on 2 things: OL & pass rush. Here?

And the teams that almost won the Superbowl did okay as well... Wins and loses. The team just hasn?t won enough to prove they?re going in the right direction, and the Chargers have just lost to many pro-bowlers and playmakers, and not filled those voids.

by gatesoftds on Dec 25, 2011 10:32 PM PST up reply actions Keep Norv,FIRE AJ Seriously people,Norv is a great coach,it?s the management that doesn?t want to keep or get the great players to compliment want San Diego already has,Fire AJ?Point Blank!!!

by Jack Huber on Dec 24, 2011 11:47 PM PST reply actions AJ and his ego HAVE to go. It all comes down to that. As long as AJ is there they will never get a great coach. His ego requires a coach that will kiss his ass and do whatever he wants. It is past time to move on and try something completely new.

by unusualpsycho on Dec 25, 2011 12:37 AM PST reply actions Game Yesterday I just don?t understand any decisions that were made yesterday. There were no adjustments made on either side of the ball and Norv. once again sat back and watched this team lose. Why not challenge that fumble that ended up in the end zone. Though it looked as if they wouldn?t win it at least it could have slowed down the Lions. Also, why go in the first half with 2 timeouts in your pocket. When the Lions were driving at the end of the half he could have used those timeouts and left rivers with 1min to get down the field and have a chance at 3. Another issue that I noted was why is it that Rivers didn?t have an assistant or someone going over photos with him to try to figure out the defense. Nearly every QB in the league does this Brady, Rodgers, and especially Brees. Rivers simply went to the sideline and just waited (at least this is what it seemed like) Finally, if Norv. does not handle packages then whomever does needs the AX as well. Patrick Crayton took 5 steps back this year Vincent Brown is playing well so why is Crayton in nearly every snap and VB comes out for two snaps and gets 2 catches. Also, when you are down by large numbers do you want a large clunky back in or an explosive playmaker with speed. Matthews needed to be in PERIOD.

by aesimpleton on Dec 25, 2011 8:32 AM PST up reply actions Thats the true We have seen this more than once this year. The team is a reflection of Norv, soft. Also, Manusky gotta go.

by cleyton on Dec 25, 2011 8:32 AM PST via mobile up reply actions The Good Lets be honest there was NO GOOD in that game yesterday 3 sacks big deal who cares. That was a totally unprepared team on the field yesterday the coaches being the most confused. Could not get off the field on 3rd down Manusky is horrible. The play calling is a joke. Hard to believe they can follow up one of the most complete team victories I have ever sean against Baltimore with that miserable performance. And the guy that is supposed to be the leader Rivers he was terrible that pick for a TD at the end sums it all up. The San Diego Chargers will only go as far as Rivers takes them and he is not good enough to get the job done in the end he will not even be the best QB to not win a Super Bowl he is not a leader he does not inspire guys. No Playoffs again friggin ridiculous. AJ, Norv and Manusky should be sent packing.

by Nicky Mac on Dec 25, 2011 7:50 AM PST reply actions Sparano If NORV stays bring in Sparano to bring emotion to this Team.. But I think it?s time for NORV to go.. He had his shot.. Fisher great choice.. Always got the most out of teams.. Maybe AJ goes to Oakland and brings NORV with him? One can only hope..

by Bone in on Dec 25, 2011 8:03 AM PST via mobile reply actions New Strategy AJ you should have given Marty one more season. You could have probably made it to the Super Bowl. Why hire Norv in the first place? He couldn?t get Oakland a winning season. Let?s get a coach that wins, not loses, and defensive coach that knows what defense is.

by Zach (maestro876) on Dec 25, 2011 10:54 PM PST up reply actions Norv and AJ both need to go... We?ll never get an elite head coach as long as AJ is the GM. No coach worth anything wants to deal with him. He needs to go and we need Bill Cowher.
