Braylon Edwards

An old friend is presently available. He would fill a need. How interested is Gang Green? Would the Jets replace Plaxico Burress with Braylon Edwards?

The reasons for wanting Edwards are obvious. He had a productive 2010 with the Jets, registering 53 catches for 904 yards and 7 touchdowns. Mark Sanchez trusted him. Sanchez threw balls up and trusted big Braylon to go get the ball in a way he never trusted Burress. Braylon is a mismatch, 6'3" 214 pounds with explosive straight line speed. He is a good run blocker for what it is worth in a receiver as the Jets go to a system that depends on the power run game. He was a perfect compliment with Santonio Holmes. When the Jets had the two of them together in 2010, the dual deep threats on the outside opened up things underneath, a great contrast with 2011 when defenses were content to only defend the first 15 yards on the field. He will also be extremely cheap coming off a down year.

The reasons for not wanting him are the same as when he left the Jets and have a lot to do with the reasons he will be extremely cheap. He has the reputation around the league as being a guy who only plays hard when he feels like it. He has a long list of off field problems, and even having a new contract hanging in the balance could not motivate him to stay out of the news for the wrong reasons. He has a diva reputation only enhanced by the way he complained on Twitter when the Jets were not trying hard enough to keep him, perhaps not the kind of personality a team that has locker room problems wants to bring in. Three teams have now been quick to get rid of him. He also did absolutely nothing to prove the Jets wrong for not giving him the multiyear deal he wanted. The 49ers thought so little of him that they simply cut him, allowing any other team in the league to pick him up for the stretch run, even when it meant starting Ted Ginn at receiver. He also has a new knee condition that needs examination.

I think Braylon's detractors are too quick to ignore the logic for bringing him back, and a certain element of the Jets fanbase is unwilling to even acknowledge the real faults Bray has that would make a reunion less than a slam dunk bet for success. On the whole, though, I think the team would be hard-pressed to find a better bargain relative to talent, need, and price. There would not be a ton of risk to signing Braylon because he is in no position to demand any kind of a big contract. Edwards certainly has been a problem child in his career, but Rex Ryan seems to have been the one coach to get through to him.

I think the Jets should take a long look at Braylon. I am not sure whether they will. I tend to think if they were not willing to go after him even after a good 2010, they might not after his bad 2011. I think if both sides are honest, they will realize that splitting up was good for neither of them. I understand the Jets not giving him a big deal, but at a bargain price, he is certainly worth considering.

by JetKing55 on Jan 21, 2012 12:46 PM EST reply actions Assuming his knee is fine and he?s on his best behavior, I?m fine with them resigning him. If he gets arrested or even connected in any way shape or form to some illegal activity, I would want him dropped faster than you can say ?Jets.? He?s been involved in two bar fights and a DUI where he put other players at risk. At some point you have to draw the line.

by MDGeekyGrl on Jan 21, 2012 1:20 PM EST up reply actions off topic but... If holmes does get suspended for a year are there any different ways for his contract to not be allowed or valid?

by JetMet on Jan 21, 2012 2:16 PM EST up reply actions the other players put themselves at risk getting in a car with someone you know is over the limit shows a blot on their character too . in fact getting in the car encouraged bray more .

by dawg1331 on Jan 21, 2012 12:47 PM EST via mobile reply actions Bring him back cheap and give him a chance to redeem himself. Still draft a receiver in the mid rounds tho in case it doesn?t pan out so that we have some depth to work with.

by darshv3 on Jan 21, 2012 12:50 PM EST reply actions Defenitely expect this to happen and I like it. Sanchez and Braylon have good chemistry so this should be a good move. The only thing I dont like is that Harbaugh who is a great coach got rid of him but since he will come cheap this is a good move for us with little downside.

by bklynbrewcrew on Jan 21, 2012 12:53 PM EST reply actions HELL TO THE DOUBLE HELL YES!!!! This was one of the mistakes the Jets FO made last year, they shouldve rewarded Edwards with the huge contract for his ?team? play for 2 seasons, instead they dumped him and signed the locker room cancer Holmes?I hated they did that, Edwards always played like a Jet, Holmes is NOT a #1 WR on ANY team, hes too small and in all honesty he doesnt take care of the ball well and i havent seen him block on 1 running play, cut his freakin ass already.

"The message to the rest of the league is, hey, the Jets are coming, and we're going to give you everything we got. And I think that's going to be more than you can handle"

by BachsOfRain on Jan 22, 2012 1:15 PM EST up reply actions I think there is no chance they bring him back After all the emphasis on building a stronger locker room, they are going to bring back a player with a huge ego and a long list of issues off the field? Not to mention he had a horrible season with the Niners, and they cut him right before their first playoff game. Only an idiot assaults a guy right before he is set to sign a long term deal.

by MDGeekyGrl on Jan 21, 2012 1:24 PM EST up reply actions Needing a roster spot for someone else isn't a good reflection of Braylon Oh yes that's right, I'm a Jets fan.

by AFCxxBEAST on Jan 21, 2012 1:38 PM EST up reply actions I think Braylon would be a good pick up for the Jets... But after feeling slighted, I don?t exactly think NYJ would be among the top of his wish list. Depending on price as well, I think Mario Manningham and Robert Meachem are better options as well.

Exactly The Jets chose Holmes over him. They felt he was the more talented receiver, and that Braylon?s issues were even more of a concern. Despite Holmes? struggles, I haven?t seen anything to make me think they were wrong.

Oh and by the way, unless you count using twitter as an act of violence, he didn?t assault anyone before he got he signed his contract.

by CervezaVerde on Jan 21, 2012 5:01 PM EST up reply actions That may be your opinion But he did feel slighted last year. While I agree that he put himself in that position, it doesn?t exactly seem like he shares that view.

Then he can pout about it from his couch Because no team is going to give him what he thinks is a respectable offer. Honestly though, it doesn?t matter to me if we sign him or not. I think there are plenty of receivers that could give us similar production without the headache.

Hopefully his attitude changes If he wants to come back with a more humble attitude and prove himself, I?m all for giving him another chance. But if not, then I don?t want him on this team.

by Dylan87 on Jan 21, 2012 1:27 PM EST up reply actions I don't doubt he's not going to get the offer he wanted. But if he gets similar offer to the Jets, I don?t think he?ll choose NYJ because he?s familiar with them. I also agree, there are plenty of WRs out there and I happen to think there are better options even.

Then its his loss With the Jets, he had a coach that was willing to defend him in every situation, great chemistry with the starting QB, a perfect fit in the offense, and he was able to be part of a winning team. He can go to another team instead if he wants, but the results may not be different from this season.

The one... ? team in the NFL that B. Edwards has proven to be a success story with is the Jets. I remember him helping M. Sanchez with his confidence and putting plays behind him from day 1. The end result was it made them both better players as the ?chemistry? and ?trust? between Sanchez/Edwards continued to grow. Braylon Edwards skill set is a perfect fit for this team.

After deciding to go with S. Holmes over B. Edwards in retrospect I think the F.O. would have done things differently. The fact remains that the Jets offense would benefit by having a ?Healthy? B. Edwards, and most likely he would benefit by being a Jet. I would like to see the Jets make this move as the reward outweighs the risk at this point and I see it as a win-win situation.

by BachsOfRain on Jan 22, 2012 1:35 PM EST up reply actions If not Yea I?d like to see Bray back and if not some big fast receiver you can stretch the field. I for one before the season wanted Bray more than Holmes, but was happy with Holmes until the cancer set in. So if it Bray or not we need a big fast WR no doubt. The FO was to stupid to realize that along with our Offense coaches. We have holes to fill but still have a strong foundation to build on.

by ocjet on Jan 21, 2012 1:17 PM EST reply actions Yes. Bring him back. Yes he needs us just as much as we need him. I?d sign braylon and maybe even plax (they might fight for #17 though). If we don?t sign plax, we should draft Dwight Jones from UNC. Tall, great speed, great hands and is a good run blocker too.

"The message to the rest of the league is, hey, the Jets are coming, and we're going to give you everything we got. And I think that's going to be more than you can handle"

Plax... ? was not expected to comeback to the level he was playing at this season according to league analyst. In fact I think many people were surprised he played as well as he did tying the team for most TD?s in 2011. The biggest question mark was supposed to be his legs, and that was a problem. He should have a better year this season than he did last season and it would be nice to see M. Sanchez get the chance to work with WR?s he is familiar with. I think the team would be in good shape at WR with S.Holmes(humbled), B. Edwards(healthy), P. Burris(in football shape) and J. Kerley(year #2) in addition to P.Turner(competition). For a team that wants to run the ball first and foremost I see this five man tandem ranking well above average and that is not even mentioning last years top target TE D. Keller. Edwards/Burris should be a bargain for many reasons and with more pressing needs at other positions(OL/DL/LB and S), bargains need to be found wherever possible.

by BachsOfRain on Jan 22, 2012 2:02 PM EST up reply actions What do we have to lose? After 8-8 and no playoffs, the only place we can go is up.

by Scott Piazza on Jan 21, 2012 1:39 PM EST reply actions injury Didn?t he have surgery on his knee? That can diminish his ability. I really don?t want him back. We should activate some WR?s on our practice squad like Eron Riley, Scotty Mckinght. You never know we might have a Victor Cruz in there.

the chances of finding our own Victor Cruz off the bargain bin are slim if it were that easy, people wouldn?t be reaching for WRs in the first round so often.

by PowerBar on Jan 21, 2012 4:03 PM EST up reply actions absolutely yes they should have signed both Holmes and Braylon last season not just one. he had a fresh start as a Jet and did a good job helping Sanchez. i think they should bring him back definitely, not only cause Plax is terrible but because Mark is comfortable with Braylon. pick up right where they left off.

by BachsOfRain on Jan 22, 2012 2:03 PM EST up reply actions I don't want to get him. I demand we get him. The Jets will win the Super Bowl one day and that will be the day i laugh in your face if your not a Jets fan.

by sanchise6 on Jan 21, 2012 2:11 PM EST reply actions Yes Plax was a waste of a roster spot. Should have kept Edwards and not gone after Plax Or Mason.

by FrankG929 on Jan 21, 2012 2:19 PM EST reply actions Easy Call on this If he is healthy and can be signed cheap, sign him up. If not, dont.

by Fartman on Jan 21, 2012 3:00 PM EST reply actions its a no brainer yes bring him back, even with his off field issues, they never should of let him go in the first place.

by michael224a on Jan 21, 2012 3:30 PM EST reply actions Unless there's a better alternative this is a low risk high reward situation What are the alternatives? Drafting WRs in the early rounds is not a sure thing, and then we?d have to give the rookie time to learn the system. We?d have better value using our early picks on sure players for positions that are more of need.

And enough with this character issue thing. Plenty of players have done more horrible things off and on the field. I have NEVER heard him take plays off as a Jet. And there was never any evidence of him being a clubhouse cancer like Holmes.

He might not be the brightest guy, but he was never the divisive player that some of the people here blame him to be. Certainly not as a Jet. That title goes to Holmes. Give him an incentive laden contract and lets use our draft picks on RT and our interior D.

by PowerBar on Jan 21, 2012 4:14 PM EST reply actions Braylon, Holmes, Keller, and Kerley with Patrick Turner as an extra red zone threat, and Jeff Cumberland as an extra receiver between the numbers. That is a great offense to spread out and burn linebackers, or bring in and smash the football.

by ProfScorpio on Jan 21, 2012 5:02 PM EST up reply actions If he wants to come back, I'd love to have him again. But there?s no telling how he feels about the franchise.

by Crackback on Jan 21, 2012 4:51 PM EST via mobile reply actions Why instead of The question said instead of Plax. Why not both. Braylon deep threat to stretch the field & Plax end zone threat for a short field.

Don?t like Turmer at all get rid of him & we need another pass catching tight end. I wanted one last year. See what the 2 TE?s that play for the evil up north are doing. With a ground & pound 2 good TE?s would be better than 2 avg WR.

With a Team... ? that is going to run the ball, two TE sets make even more sense. I remember when the Jets had R. Castor and J. Barkum way before the evil up north. It was fun to watch those big fast sure handed men haul in passes eating up chunks of yardage if not scoring. I would love to see a big fast TE/WR hybrid get drafted this year as NE is proving how versatile they can be in todays NFL. A. Hernandez is the perfect example of how valuable/effective a TE/WR hybrid can be in helping an offense become productive.

by chrebetsthebet on Jan 21, 2012 5:45 PM EST reply actions YES! Keep plax I got a feeling he"s going to bring his ?A? game this year and we know Homes is staying and Kerley is developing, the missing peace is Edwards but the main issue we got to fix the O.F line if not we are done!

by Rod Messley on Jan 22, 2012 6:30 PM EST reply actions I would love Braylon Back He was a huge piece of this offense. This team went on a bunch of 3 and outs, but with Edwards back, Mark will have a great target that he is familiar with.
