With the Penn State football team already deep into its winter workout schedule, new assistant coach Craig Fitzgerald has a full strength and conditioning staff in place.

View full sizeJoe Hermitt, The Patriot-NewsWith running backs coach Charles London and the rest of the offensive coaching staff already in place, Bill O'Brien is in the market for one final offensive assistant -- either a quarterbacks coach, or an offensive coordinator.

Dwight Galt IV and Steven Williams Jr. worked under Fitzgerald during his tenure as the head strength coach at South Carolina. Sean Hayes comes to State College from Jacksonville University, where he was a graduate assistant on the football strength staff, as well as the varsity outside linebackers coach and the junior varsity defensive coordinator.

In an interview last month, O?Brien said he could go "in a couple of different ways" with the ninth member of his coaching staff. With all the other offensive coaching positions filled, he?s likely to either add an offensive coordinator or a quarterbacks coach.

For a long time, that ninth assistant was rumored to be George Godsey, an offensive assistant with the New England Patriots who also played quarterback at Georgia Tech when O?Brien was the offensive coordinator there in the early 2000s.

But Godsey might no longer be in the mix. Last week, the coaching job website FootballScoop.com reported that "several sources over the past few weeks have been telling us that George Godsey will not wind up joining the staff at Penn State as quarterbacks coach."

As of Tuesday morning, Godsey was still on the Patriots staff, a spokesperson for New England confirmed through an email to The Patriot-News.

Penn State Sports Information Director Jeff Nelson said Tuesday that O?Brien is "in the process of determining the final member of his coaching staff, and that coach will work with the offense."

How much money is being sucked out of this football juggernaut? Looks like they are hiring and spending without need or care. What's next? Locker room manger, towel manger, squat watcher, bleacher manger, shower manger, and a gopher for O'Brien? It is beyond human comprehension to waste this much revenue on egotistical jocks and over-paid coaches during this chaotic economy.

Losekey, you seem to have both a loose key and several screws loose. PSU football supports itself and most other PSU sports, so whatever the program makes on ticket sales, licensing, concessions, parking, nittany lion club dues, etc. pay the coaches and way more. Plus prior to the attacks on Joe Paterno, he raised more funds for the University than can be counted. So why don't you crawl back under the rock where you came from.

Penn State has had one of the lower paid staffs for years. Plus, it's a self supporting program, so unless you have season tickets and the cost is rising, why would you care what they are paid?
