After a loss in their opening game, the Perth Scorchers travel to Melbourne?s Etihad Stadium to take on the Melbourne Renegades in the seventh Big Bash League 2011-12 game on Thursday. We?ll bring you the live scores and commentary of the action throughout the opening game, with the match starting at 7.00 pm ADST time on December 21.

The Scorchers needed to score only 141 to notch up their first points in their opener. They fell away 31 runs short but the game was over when they lost half their side for 44.

First they allowed the Adelaide Strikers to get away to a mountainous 189. Then, only three of their top-order players managed to get into double figures as they capitulated to a shoddy 122 all out.

So when the two sides, the Scorchers and Renegades meet at the Etihad Stadium, it is not only their first points that will be at stake. Better effort with the bat and ball will be expected from both teams as well.

His place could well be taken by Shaun Marsh, who will look to use this game to test his fitness ahead of the Melbourne Test. The management may allow Marsh to open the innings and push Marcus North down the order.

Shaun Tait and Dirk Nannes are both fast but equally quick off the bat. With more teams discovering the value behind taking the pace off the ball, it may not be such a bad idea to have someone like Glen Maxwell or even Afridi take the new ball.

Again, batting Afridi at four is a couple spots too high. Captain Andrew McDonald will do well to rope in an extra batsman but it could depend on whether Brad Hodge is fit.

We will bring you the coverage throughout the game at the Etihad in Melbourne and hope to receive your opinions as the action unfolds.

But Shahid Afridi?s inability to control the flow of runs, something he is absolutely good at, a dropped catch off both, Marsh and Gibbs and some excellent running between the wickets won it for Perth.

That looked like a delivery in anger from Tait and short and Mitchell threw the kitchen sink. Got a top-edge and it carries over the short boundary behind the wicket-keeper.

Another miss?run-out this time. Mitchell Marsh should have been run-out at the striker?s end but Graham Manou failed to collect the ball from the boundary-rider?s throw.

News about Aaron Finch, who was smacked on his chest by Ben Edmondson: He has been taken to a hospital with a suspected punctured lung. He looked like he was in trouble when it hit him.

Slower one, Marsh had to adjust the stroke after having committed himself to it but still managed to hit it into the narrow gap between deep mid-wicket and long-on.

After conceding only four off his first nine balls he bowled, Harwood goes for a six. Marsh deposits it into the stands behind mid-wicket and it is dropped by the fans again!

Spoiled only by four byes off the last ball ? a wrong ?un missed by Gibbs and then by wicket-keeper Graham Manou goes to the boundary.

Shahid Afridi, who did not bat today, now gets the chance to bowl. Undoubtedly one of the best bowlers in the shorter format of the game.

Good opening over from Shane Harwood. Four dot balls to Shaun Marsh followed by a leg-bye before Gibbs? reputation gets Harwood to bowl a wide.

Make way, Gibbs is back! Three fours from the five balls and ends the over with a big six over mid-wicket. 18 runs off that over and the match is very much on.

A four off an inside-edge now and Tait?s breathing fire. Marsh got those four and he has a slight smirk on his face even as Tait fumes.

Tait?s doing a good, good job. He?s bowling fast as he usually does but what is not usual about his bowling so far is that he hasn?t got his lengths awry so far.

Could well have been six and out. Wanted to go over mid-off but McDonald runs around and catches it. The spill happens when his elbow touches the ground ? could be a costly miss there.

Suneer did you hear the news about Ed Cowan today, Ed cowantsparents home was burgled in the wealthy Sydney suburb Darling Point, in a 4 hour police siege. They caught him and he was taken to a psychiatric hospital for evaluation, pretty dangergous stuff today, .

Earlier, the Renegades were given an excellent start by Aaron Finch and Andrew McDonald. Finch scored 49 while McDonald went on to complete his half-century.

Hogg?s 1/22 from four overs was the spell of the innings while Michael Beer bowled his four overs for 28 and got a couple of wickets. The others were taken to the cleaners.

Reardon hits the meat of the bat and the commentators call it correctly, almost Gilchrist-like flick that goes miles outside the fence.

Maxwell is bowled! Beer bowls it a tad slower and Maxwell aims for his fourth six. But is beaten all ends and the balls sneaks through to disturb the bails.

There were four singles from Rimmington?s first four deliveries but this was followed by a brace and a boundary for captain McDonald off the last two. He moves on to 44 and Melbourne 1/103 in 12.

It was a quicker one pitched up and Finch, who was looking restless, tried to advance to the bowler. Yorked himself and was cleaned up. Finch?s gone for 49, missing a well-deserved half-century.

Marsh, who had a good opening game for the Perth Scorchers comes on to replace Beer. Marsh conceded only 25 from his four in that game even as the rest went for aplenty.

Not a good over from Beer. It starts with a boundary for Finch through extra-cover which is followed by two wides down the leg-side.

And begins by inducing an edge from Finch off the first ball. No second slip and it races away despite the slow outfield, to the fence.

The Renegades missed the calming presence of Brad Hodge in the first game. Shahid Afridi and Abdul Razzaq did not have a good day either.

Perth also did not bat well in their opener. Both their foreign signings, Herschelle Gibbs and Paul Collingwood failed and this could well be the game where most of these four foreign contracts come good.

Melbourne Renegades have won the toss and will bat first. Different tactic from the previous game against Adelaide when they fielded after winning the toss.

Both sides have played a game and lost it. One team at the end of today?s game will have opened their account and the other will join Brisbane Heat as the only other side without any points.

Today the Perth Scorchers will play the Melbourne Renegades in the seventh Big Bash league game. The game will be played at the Docklands in Melbourne.
