Debra L. Rothenberg for NewsSome doctors say Dr. Oz's arsenic claim is a red herring, and apple juice's real threat is the empty calories kids are guzzling down.

A war of words erupted Thursday between the Emmy-winning heart surgeon and the Food and Drug Administration over the safety of the lunchbox staple.

For a segment of his syndicated show this week, Oz had five popular brands of apple juice tested and said some had more arsenic than what's acceptable for drinking water.

A day later, the Food and Drug Administration hit back, saying Oz's method was flawed and did not distinguish harmful inorganic arsenic from the organic type.

"It reminds me of yelling fire in a movie theater," a top pediatrician, Dr. Richard Besser, told him during a showdown on ABC's "Good Morning America."

A spokesman for the Manhattan doc's show said organic arsenic may not be as benign as the government says it is and that the public should know what is in the food they eat.

Urvashi Rangan, a scientist with Consumer Reports, said that organic arsenic can convert to the inorganic, toxic kind and that other studies have also found elevated levels.

In the meantime, Brooklyn pediatrician Dr. Philippa Gordon said there is no reason for parents who give their kids apple juice to panic.

"It's the FDA's job to regulate foods and their safety and they have a better facility and are better prepared to do that," she said.

Sep 15, 2011http://abcnews.go.com/blogs/health/2011/09/15/dr-besser-vs-dr-oz-apple-juice-showdown-on-gma/.......Here is a good debate. Regardless, I have about 7 bottles of Mott Apple Juice and they may be going in the garbage. Dr. Oz said about 60% of our apples come from overseas (i.e., China) where there are no regulations on arsenic. Something to think about...I don't want to eat/drink anything coming from China.

Sep 15, 2011Read "Silent Spring" and maybe you will understand where Dr. Oz is coming from. Arsenic can be found in apple seeds as well as well water. The FDA is a joke.

Sep 15, 2011I wonder if cranberry juice is safe? Please advise. I like juice with my breakfast and snacks. I am going to Whole Foods to buy organic. I am throwing all the Mott Juice out, even though the wife caught a good sale on them.

Sep 15, 2011In a contest between reason and quackery, most Americans invariably come down on the side of the latter. Where there are not witches, there are Chinese; where are are not vapors there are alarming toxins. The average American is no more familiar with the tenets of science than is a Ubanghi tribesman, but the tribesman is surely less afraid of his own habitat.

Thank you!

Sep 15, 2011Having a history dealing with FDA & EPA I can help with this: many of the testing procedures insisted upon by both FDA and EPA regulatory proceedings are designed to produce results that favor municipalities, manufacturing concerns and federal agencies. In other words: the tests they insist be used are designed to destroy the compounds of interest and prevent lawsuits. Dc Oz is a victim of that same scenario: he used newer lab analysis equipment, thinking foolishly that the results would stand on their own validity. But because EPA & FDA demand you use their testing procedures in order to make claims for toxicology they can, legally, say his techniques were at fault. His techniques are not faulty: theirs' are. He is right: we've validated those same tests.

Sep 15, 2011No one really needs juice anyway other than maybe cranberry juice because its ability to help clean out certain things. Even though apple juice has natural sugars (assuming you get 100% juice versions), it's still concentrated sugars which are not good for diabetes. More nutrition comes from eating the actual fruit to get the fiber and red/green color benefits in your system. Your better off using Crystal Light water flavor powder unless you have an issue with artificial sweeteners. By the way, this is the same FDA that was interviewed by 60 Minutes earlier in the year trying to explain why counterfeit drugs that don't are being received some patients in the US, and revealing that they are understaffed. They quick response to Dr. Oz instead of investigating what he said suggests that they are doing more CYA than anything. Afterall, it would take money to further regulate apple juice.

Sep 15, 2011The FDA is and alway has been in bed with drug manufacturers, agribiz and factory farming. The last person besides Oz I know of who stood up to them was Frances Kelsey, who refused to approve thalidomide. She turned out to be right, but the FDA, her employer, crucified her anyway. FDA practices are the reason there are e. coli outbreaks and that other toxins regularly appear in our food supply. I'd really like to know how many CEos of these food producing companies and their families actually eat the garbage they sell to the American public.
