Saturday, May 21, 2011 |0 CommentDoctors, dietitians, and other 'experts' want you to believe that weight gain is a simple, mathematical equation: calories in minus calories out equals weight change. Unfortunately for the experts, the human body is a living creature, and so massively complex as to baffle most human attempts to comprehend it. Weight gain is one of these areas that popular science just doesn't comprehend.
There are so many reasons why your body might put on weight that simplification is extraordinarily counterproductive. Here are a few of the less-understood and almost never-discussed reasons you might be putting on the pounds:
We're not talking about your dairy or nut intolerance. A true food allergy is always to a protein, never a fat or a carbohydrate. That's because a true food allergy is always a 'leaky gut' problem -- meaning that your intestines allow proteins that don't belong to your body into parts of your body that they're not supposed to be in, which causes your body to interpret them as invaders. That makes your body get inflamed internally whenever you eat those foods -- and that inflammation requires water, which makes you drink more than you normally would, which makes you put on weight.
Keep eating those foods you're allergic to over a long period of time, and you tax your body's Omega 3/Omega 6 fatty acid balances, which can lead to whole-body pain (including many cases of fibromyalgia), and reduced sugar-processing ability, which is the primary cause of weight gain in the United States.
Of course, we all eat when we're depressed, but there's a lot more to this than meets the eye. Not just depression, but nearly two-thirds of altered mood states can lead to overeating, from physical drives due to mania to simple lack of attention to portion control due to apathy. It takes an alert, energized person to eat right.
The sad part is, eating right would cure 80% of these mood disorders. In her excellent book, The Diet Cure, Julia Ross describes the amino-acid (protein) deficiencies that cause a huge variety of mood disorders from the blahs to Cymbalta-style "where does depression hurt?" kind of depression. The short version is: eat raw red meat and raw egg yolks, cut the white flour and sugar, and you can cure most mood disorders in a week - which means less overeating, which means weight will drop off.
The big villain here is candida (yeast) infections. Yeast infections used to be thought to be a feminine-hygine issue, and thus they are still taboo topics in many places. But a startling number of people, male and female, have systemic yeast infections that cause huge hormonal and other imbalances in their bodies. The hardest part of dealing with an entrenched yeast infection is it's endurance -- yeast can live under your toenails (for example) for nearly a year, and there's almost nothing you can do to solve the problem except diligently stick with an anti-candida regimen for that entire year, because one slip-up and the yeast that hides in such places will take back over in days.
Other less well-known infections can also be problematic, but they all share one thing in common: they live on sugars. Switch to a ketogenic (low-carb) diet, and up your protein consumption to 80+ grams each day, and the infection will die off. You just have to stick with it until there's no place left for it to hide.
