Yesterday the 136th annual Westminster festivities kicked off in New York City with judging in the Hound (including the basset hound, bloodhound, and the adorably named otterhound), Toy (poodles! pugs! pomeranians! the very luxurious Cavalier King Charles spaniel pictured to your right!), Non-Sporting (bulldogs, though somehow, not this one) and Herding (like collies, German shepherds) breeds.

Today?s judging, which airs on USA from 8-11 p.m. EST, will include Sporting, Working, and Terrier breeds and varieties, all leading up to the announcement of Best in Show. (In the meantime, you can watch a live feed of the show on the WKC?s website, sadly none of which includes the dazzling commentary of Buck Laughlin.)

There was one beagle (just one) in the hound group who was wagging his tail and looked to be having a blast. The others...not so much. Cute beagle, though.

They're in work-mode. There are plenty of animals being abused in this world and AKC registered dog show dogs aren't even close to being one of them.

I wasn't trying to imply they were treated poorly (though I'd hate to have my hair done like the maltese). Rather, just pointing out that at least one dog looked happy.

I think it's cute, too, how excited some of the dogs get jumping around when they all gather to congratulate the group winner. Lots of jumping and barking.

I also was not implying that they are being abused. I was just pointing out that they don't look happy. They usually look pretty cheerful around their handlers and not one of these photos exhibits that.

Ok- Sorry for the misinterpretation, then :) I know a dog who gets so bored they have to teach him vocabulary words every week just to occupy his brain, lol. To many it may seem like they're "hounding" him, but it's just a reality- he's actually happier being able to respond to "sneeze".

The dogs in the show ring, probably are NOT abused, BUT there are breeders that abuse animals. Some kill white boxer puppies! Some kill the runts and dogs 'less than show worthy'. I will NEVER buy a dog from a breeder. ADOPTION is the ONLY way to go!!!! I will be glad when EVERY pet shop is closed for a pet adoption center!

You have to watch them as they perform - Mystic Ava Gardner last night was having a blast - I'm a sheltie owner and I know a happy Sheltie when I see one. My friends who show truly love their dogs and the dogs love the attention.

Best in Show is still one of my favorite movies. If you haven't seen it, rent it. Great cast and a great look at what I suspect isn't far from the truth of dog shows.

one of the dogs last night, I think it was a Brussels Griffon, was named Tina Fey! Awesome show...Loved the Peke and German Shepherd...Tonight will be lots of fun...

Somebody groom the humans, and give them some fashion sense. Is seeing the outrageously coiffed dogs, being run by plodding, overweight handlers, part of the attraction?

I use to love watching the dog shows, but when I heard about some of the practices breeders use, I stopped. I am all about adopting now! Most breeders kill white boxer puppies because they cannot be shown!! Some breeders kill runts and keep their dogs in horrific situations!

These are not true breeders, these are the people who run the puppy mills and are only looking for the most for their buck. The true responsible breeder is one who is loving and caring and truly respects the animal and it's breed and who sole intent is to maintain the best characteristics of the breed and at the same time providing a forever home to a puppy. While I admire your willingness to adopt don't put the true breeder in with those who run puppy mills.

First, I did say some not all! Second, as long as white boxers are not show worthy and should not be bred (per AKC), what do 'good' breeders do with them? Post them on craigslist so they end up as bait dogs? I know that is extreme, but really what do 'good' breeders do with white boxers?
